The Design Manager, Rail, Calgary (NOC 0711) reports directly to the Director of Pre-Construction and will have in-depth knowledge of detailed design with general contractor construction experience.

As a Design Manager, Rail at Graham you will:

For RFQ/RFP:

  • Coordinate with contractors, operations, and maintenance teams, ensuring their technical and commercial expertise is factored into the construction-design (including issues of constructability)
  • Review the construction project design to ensure compliance with customer/client requirements
  • Participate in the selection and recruitment of project Design Consultants
  • Supervise and review Design Consultants with regard to quality, schedule and costs
  • Attend design review meetings and act as a Project Representative
  • Complete design handover documentation/reports
  • Negotiate scope, price and terms and conditions for Design Works
  • Determine, define and monitor design schedules and deliverables
  • Lead the Design team in the Value Management and engineering exercise

For DETAILED DESIGN:

  • As above as required including the following additional items
  • Ensure RFP design is carried forward to detailed design
  • Operate a change management system for all design items including recording of change responsibility (client, construction or design team)
  • Ensure design schedule matches construction requirements and provide liaison between design and construction teams for schedule changes

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering or a related field is required  
  • Knowledge of Rail Electrical Systems which includes: automation and signalling
  • 10 years' experience as a Design Lead/Manager on large Infrastructure projects including rail
  • 5+ years' experience in a Lead Role for large rail Infrastructure projects for a general contracting company
  • Previous experience in selecting and managing sub-contractors
  • 5+ years' experience working on design-build or P3/PFI contract models
  • Proven ability to effectively manage project design for rail projects valued up to $140 million
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of construction (technology, equipment, materials, negotiation, engineering, estimating, scheduling and safety).  

Compensation and Benefits:

  • This is a full-time, permanent role
  • Competitive salary ($140,000 - $180,000) with annual bonus potential
