Job Description

BBA is currently seeking a Project Manager/Environmental Planner to establish the Environment Department at its Vancouver’s office. The successful candidate will have a comprehensive knowledge of environmental laws/regulations and practices pertaining to various developments throughout western Canada, with a core focus in the mining sector as well as in the renewable energy market (hydropower, wind and solar power). The work consists of developing, coordinating and carrying out projects for environmental studies and permitting work for various projects. The candidate will also assist the Environmental Director build Vancouver’ Environmental Department, manage a team as well as work in collaboration with other scientists and engineers throughout BBA.

The candidate will also act as a seller-doer and participate actively in different phases of the business development continuum. This role will focus on cultivating existing relationships, identifying forthcoming opportunities with clients, cross-selling services, and looking to work at different locations with the same client. The Team Lead/Project Manager will act as a team member in the overall BBA team to identify, pursue and develop opportunities.

Scope of work includes:

  • Support the Environmental Director in developing an robust environmental team in Vancouver
  • Play an active role in business development
  • Manage and direct project work; define tasks and responsibilities, develop budgets and schedules and determine allocation of resources
  • Coordinate a team made up of biologists, geographer, engineers and wildlife technicians
  • Provides environmental and regulatory support to developments related to the mining, renewable and infrastructure development sectors, including prospecting, scoping, proposal preparation, and implementation
  • Develops strategies for obtaining environmental regulatory authorization and for responding to public and regulatory review of projects.
  • Represents company projects to regulators, industry groups, environmental groups, landowners, Aboriginal peoples and the public
  • Plan and manage meetings both internally, with team members, and externally, with other relevant stakeholders or subcontractors
  • Ensure that deadlines, schedules and budgets are met and promptly notify senior management to renegotiate, where necessary
  • Ensure that information is shared with the team and that members provide appropriate information that is produced in a timely manner, complete and properly analyzed and presented
  • Produce documents (studies, notices, surveys, boundaries, inventory, reports, follow-ups, etc.) adapted to intended clients
  • Coordinate field surveys, analyses and studies, sampling and other biological field surveys, draft reports and present to clients

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology/environment or other training deemed equivalent, Master’s degree in biology/environment or related field
  • At least 15 years of relevant experience
  • Good technical and theoretical knowledge in the following areas: laws and regulations; environmental impact assessments; applications for authorization; management and conservation of the natural environment (water, wetland; limnology; botany; ichthyology; restoration of natural habitats; collection and interpretation of biophysical information)
  • Solid report writing skills
  • Ability to recognize and understand the ecological and social complexity associated with the consequences of submitted projects
  • Excellent communication skills, able to express ideas and expectations clearly, active listener, open to suggestions and feedback; ability to speak French would be an asset
  • Available for short-term assignments at client sites
