We are looking for an experienced and adaptable Senior Mechanical Engineer with significant experience and skills in many aspects of hydropower engineering. You will be a highly technical person responsible for the quality of work by more junior mechanical engineers working under your direction. BBA is recognized for its specialist knowledge of penstock design and repair, expertise in this area will be an asset.

You will play a key role in projects, from front end engineering studies through field implementation and commissioning. As part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team, this role will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of exceptional technical quality, developing new business opportunities and nurturing the professional development of members of the Mechanical team.

The Hydropower Specialist can expect to:

  • Be a key member of small to major brownfield projects involving turbines, bearings, piping, penstocks, gates, HVAC and cooling systems
  • Be a key member of small to major greenfield hydro projects involving turbine/generator specification, balance of plant design, penstock mechanical component design and intake mechanical design
  • Lead site inspections, quality assessments and oversee testing
  • Establish key client relationships and actively support business development opportunities that align with BBA's strategic vision for growth and ongoing diversification in the Western region
  • Support the department manager in providing technical mentorship and coaching of junior engineers and designers, actively sharing knowledge and supporting the enhancement of skills within the team
  • Lead the implementation of Root Cause Analysis and FMECA studies
  • Oversee junior engineers carrying out CFD, FEA and transient analyses
  • Carry out inspections to certify gates and valves for Single Device Isolation

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering with a preference for post-graduate
  • A solid, technical mechanical engineer with 18 to 22 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • At least 10 years experience in the hydropower sector with a preference for 5 years in consulting
  • Must be a registered P. Eng
  • Must have specialist knowledge in penstock design
  • Expertise in buried penstock routing, soil restraint and anchoring design
  • Experience in various penstock mediums, welded steel, rivetted steel, HDPE, woodstave.
  • Experienced in Single Device Isolation
  • Understanding of design codes: ASME, CSA, API, US Army Corps of Engineers, AWWA etc
  • Previous knowledge of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS, MatLab, MathCAD
  • Available for site work and short-term assignments at client sites
  • Valid driver's license
