Two (2) permanent, full-time positions – Toronto, ON
Toronto Water is the City of Toronto division responsible for all aspects of drinking water treatment and supply, wastewater collection and treatment, and stormwater management. The Division’s six business sections manage a large number of facilities and assets across the city, including treatment plants, pumping stations, water and sewer mains, laboratories and yards.
As a Senior Database Administrator, you will play an integral role in delivering on Toronto Water’s mandate by working collaboratively with other Database Administrators, business and technical specialists, and subject matter experts, and providing senior-level technical expertise and consultation in the area of database administration and system architecture to business users and other technical staff.
What will you accomplish?
Recognized for your commitment to customer service, performance quality, and continuous improvement, you will provide business and project plans and recommend modifications, upgrades and/or acquisitions for a data centre consisting of large capacity servers, Storage Area Network and Enterprise Database Management Systems. This will see you analyzing the utilization and integration of the database infrastructure, evaluating the existing and market-available hardware, software and network security products, studying their feasibility, assessing business requirements, and communicating with different levels of management across the Division.
The Division will rely on you to establish database standards, policies and guidelines for on-line transaction processing databases and data warehouses to ensure high availability, accessibility, security and performance. With this in mind, you will analyze the client requirements and business practices, and evaluate and apply the functions available within current market database products. You will also provide senior-level support of the software product installation, configuration, maintenance, upgrade, user account administration, troubleshooting, system/database monitoring, capacity planning and performance tuning for production, development, test and training databases in a distributed database environment.
Leading by example, you will head technical project teams to determine requirements, examine data flow, research and evaluate software, build logical and physical database architecture, develop and/or acquire, implement, and maintain databases and provide technical and business support for application software and information solutions to meet client and business user requirements. At the same time, senior management will value your recommendations regarding cost-effective system resources, database licence utilization, and the integration and optimization of the IT infrastructure, and your ability to convert, migrate and reorganize data among different database systems, products and applications to facilitate data consolidation, integration or expansion, legacy systems upgrade and server virtualization.

Given this background, you possess knowledge of planning, evaluation, analysis, design, implementation and integration of enterprise products in a large, diverse computing environment, combined with knowledge of trends in the use of current technology as it relates to data management systems. You have also honed your ability to troubleshoot, and assist in resolving, incidents reported, clearly communicate the means to resolve incidents and/or enhance applications or systems, and lead the technical change process from planning and implementation perspectives.
You are an analytically minded professional with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, adept at establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of staff and external contacts, conveying detailed technical information clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences, evaluating and identifying business requirements, and making recommendations to senior management. The ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment, while meeting tight deadlines, will prove invaluable in this role.
Due to the nature of the position, you must be willing to work flexible hours, and be on-call for support of production systems, and be able to work days, afternoons and nights, including weekends and holidays, as needed. A valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence and access to a personal vehicle are also required.
Certification of Microsoft Certified Solution Associate (MCSA) SQL 2016 or newer would be an asset.

Salary Range: $95,596.80 - $112,320.00 per annum
