Optics-Photonics in Quebec

The optics-photonics sector is booming in the province, generating 800 million dollars in sales and more than 7,000 jobs. A centre for excellence has just been launched in Quebec City, with the government’s support.

Gathering forces to be better equipped to conquer the local and international markets is the objective of optics-photonics companies which have integrated in this new Quebec centre for excellence. Supporting the initiative, the Quebec government has injected $190,000 into this project.

“This new centre for excellence will have the mission to energize and represent the entire Quebec optics-photonics ecosystem, as well as increasing its capacity to undertake large-scale and added value projects,” explains a statement from Lise Thériault, Deputy Premier and Minister Responsible for SMEs, Regulatory Relief and Regional Economic Development. “Above all, it will stimulate the potential for innovation, creativity and competitiveness in this future sector for the Quebec economy.”

Quebec wants to stand out

Optics-photonics is a key sector in the Quebec City region, and Mayor Régis Labeaume is convinced that this hub will radiate beyond its borders. “Optics-photonics has contributed greatly to the economic recovery of our region over the last 30 years,” he points out. “In addition, by attracting renowned companies and researchers, the region stands out internationally as a leader in this cutting-edge sector.”
