Job Summary We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Construction Estimator to support our bidding and proposal process. This role bridges technical estimating with client engagement, tender pursuit, and proposal management. You will be responsible for identifying opportunities, coordinating responses, and providing accurate estimates for both pre-engineered metal building supply and erection, as well as associated building components.
This role also involves a strong technical and design-oriented estimating component, including interpreting architectural and preliminary drawings, performing material take-offs, and developing preliminary building configurations using supplier design software and industry-standard pre-engineered metal building practices.
Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates and proposals for: metal building supply, metal building erection, building components (e.g., snow retention systems, cladding, insulation, liners, roofing panel, insulated metal panel)
- Perform material take-offs, interpret architectural/preliminary drawings and specifications, and assist in developing preliminary building layouts and design assumptions based on project requirements and standard PEMB practices
- Utilize supplier design and estimating software to develop preliminary building configurations, evaluate design options, and support accurate pricing and proposal development
- Identify and pursue public and private sector tenders (RFPs, RFQs, unsolicited bids) related to supply and/or erection
- Analyze procurement documents, extract key requirements, and prepare concise executive summaries for leadership
- Maintain organized tracking and reporting of RFP due dates, requirements, and outcomes
- Ensure smooth handoff of awarded building erection projects to internal project manager, ensuring all relevant information is present and organized
- Build and manage relationships with existing and prospective clients, which may include attending networking events, advisory board placements, and communication and relationship building with engineers, drafters, detailers, and sales representatives at major suppliers and burgeoning suppliers
- Provide timely follow-ups on estimates
- Ensure regular communication with key accounts
- Respond promptly to inbound calls and requests related to estimates or proposals
- Assist with other proposal-related duties as assigned
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Technical knowledge of pre-engineered metal building systems
- Experience in construction estimating and/or bid coordination
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and tender drawings/specifications and apply practical construction and PEMB design knowledge during the estimating process
- Experience with material take-offs, preliminary building layouts, or PEMB design software is considered a strong asset
- Sales acumen and ability to understand client pain points and offer tailored solutions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and confidence in client interactions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and general business software; experience with proposal management tools is a plus
- CAD design experience is an asset: Navisworks, BIM and BIM 3 Modelling, SketchUp, and other rendering platforms
