OVERVIEW Vertex is currently accepting applications for a Geotechnical & Materials Testing Technician. The position will involve conducting field and laboratory testing for geotechnical and construction materials projects. The successful applicant will work closely with the company's engineering and project management teams to accurately complete field investigations, laboratory testing programs, and technical documentation in a timely manner. Training will be provided on applicable testing procedures, field equipment, and laboratory methods. The role will also involve physical field work, including lifting and carrying testing equipment and material samples, operating field testing equipment, collecting representative soil samples, and documenting subsurface conditions during drilling and test pit investigations. CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS Civil Engineering Technology Diploma, Geological Technology Diploma, Environmental Technology Diploma, or other related science/engineering education. Valid Class 5 driver's license and access to a personal vehicle. Clean driving record. Previous experience with geotechnical field investigations, soil logging, sampling, and construction materials testing is considered an asset. Familiarity with geotechnical laboratory testing, including sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, moisture content determination, soil Proctor testing, concrete and masonry testing is preferred but not required. Experience with field density testing, concrete testing, and aggregate testing is considered an asset. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and electronic data collection systems. Ability to accurately document subsurface conditions and maintain detailed field and laboratory records. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Ability to work independently in the field and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to perform physical work and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Preferred Experience (Asset) Soil classification and logging in accordance with ASTM D2488 and the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual (CFEM). Field density testing using nuclear gauge methods. Concrete testing certifications (CCIL, CSA, or equivalent). Experience supporting drilling, test pit, and geotechnical investigation programs. Familiarity with geotechnical reporting and data management. Strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills. Valid class 5 driver’s license. RESPONSIBILITIES Performs testing, observation, and inspection as directed in accordance with training and the specified procedures. Soil sampling and logging during geotechnical investigations, field density testing, concrete sampling and testing, Laboratory testing of soil, aggregate, asphalt, and concrete materials. Routine geotechnical laboratory testing may include moisture content determination, sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, Proctor compaction testing, and other index property tests. Provides clear documentation of findings and results. Performs basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager. Communicates information to the Project Manager and other personnel as directed by the PM. Maintains assigned equipment and related calibration. Follows safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Performs pre-task planning prior to executing work. Report any safety issues or concerns to management. Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects. Occasional travel to project sites throughout Alberta may be required Perform other duties as needed LOCATION This position is based out of our Calgary location.
