Purpose The Principal Mechanical Engineer – Static Equipment is a senior technical authority and subject matter expert responsible for providing strategic engineering leadership for static equipment across major capital projects and complex brownfield scopes. This role is accountable for setting technical direction, governing engineering quality, and solving high-complexity technical challenges related to pressure vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, and associated equipment. The Principal Mechanical Engineer – Static Equipment will lead the static equipment discipline on large, multi-discipline projects and may provide oversight across multiple projects simultaneously. This role also acts as a technical mentor to Senior and Intermediate Engineers, supports business development through technical input, and plays a key role in maintaining and evolving company standards, practices, and engineering excellence. Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Subject Matter Expertise Act as a technical authority for static equipment, providing expert guidance on complex design, specification, fabrication, installation, and lifecycle management challenges. Lead and approve engineering deliverables for static equipment, including specifications, data sheets, material requisitions, technical bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations. Perform and/or oversee advanced mechanical design and analysis using industry tools (e.g., PV Elite, Compress, AME Tank), ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. Provide expert technical support for equipment selection, fitness-for-service assessments, repairs, rerates, and life extension strategies. Project Leadership & Governance Serve as the Mechanical / Static Equipment discipline lead for major capital projects or complex portfolios of work. Provide technical governance and assurance for static equipment scopes, ensuring consistency with company standards, best practices, and client requirements. Review and resolve high-risk technical issues, deviations, and non-conformances in collaboration with vendors, fabricators, inspectors, and clients. Support constructability, operability, maintainability, and reliability reviews for static equipment designs. Vendor & Client Interface Act as the senior technical point of contact with vendors and fabricators for static equipment packages. Lead technical clarification meetings, vendor document reviews, and factory acceptance activities for critical equipment. Engage directly with clients to resolve complex technical issues and provide authoritative engineering recommendations. Standards, Quality & Continuous Improvement Develop, maintain, and continuously improve static equipment design standards, specifications, templates, and work processes. Contribute to lessons learned, knowledge sharing, and technical improvement initiatives within the mechanical discipline. Support internal audits, quality reviews, and technical assurance processes related to static equipment engineering. Mentorship & Capability Building Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and oversight to Senior, Intermediate, and Junior Mechanical Engineers. Act as a technical reviewer and approver for critical deliverables produced by the static equipment team. Support competency development, technical training, and succession planning within the mechanical discipline. Project Controls & Estimating Support Provide input to scope definition, workshare strategies, staffing plans, and execution approaches for static equipment scopes. Support development and review of engineering hour estimates, deliverable lists, and Total Installed Cost (TIC) inputs related to static equipment. Contribute technical input to proposals, pursuits, and early project development phases. Technical & Industry Experience Extensive experience providing technical leadership for static equipment in Oil & Gas, Energy Transition, Refining, Gas Processing, Hydrogen, and Carbon Capture projects. Deep working knowledge of ASME, API, CSA, and applicable Canadian and international codes and standards. Demonstrated experience with pressure vessels, storage tanks, heat exchangers, air coolers, and associated static equipment across the full project lifecycle. Experience with equipment integrity, fitness-for-service, repair, alteration, and remaining life assessments is a strong asset. Proven ability to resolve complex, high-risk technical challenges and provide authoritative engineering judgement. Strong communication skills with the ability to influence technical outcomes with clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders. Education & Professional Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s degree considered an asset). Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA (or eligible for registration). Extensive experience in mechanical engineering with a strong focus on static equipment. Recognized internally and externally as a technical subject matter expert in static equipment engineering.
