Mechanical Engineer

The Opportunity: Mechanical Engineer Permanent, Full-Time position, based out of Whitehorse, Yukon. Are you a Mechanical Engineer looking for an opportunity to work on hydro and thermal power generation projects and see your work through from concept to completion? Yukon Energy is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Whitehorse, Yukon, working on the additions, upgrades and maintenance that support our generating units and facilities. What will you do: As a member of the Mechanical Engineering team, you will: Design and deliver mechanical engineering solutions supporting hydro and thermal power generation, including additions, upgrades and maintenance of generating units. Manage mechanical utility projects from concept through design, construction and closeout, including project scope, budgets, schedules, technical specifications, bid evaluations and contract administration. Work collaboratively with Engineering, Operations and Finance, providing technical expertise and making field and construction decisions to help keep projects on scope, schedule and budget. Support the safety, reliability and availability of generating equipment by evaluating equipment and operational changes and contributing to capital maintenance, upgrades and long-term planning for hydro, diesel and LNG generation. What you need to succeed: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a P.Eng. designation in Canada and eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in the Yukon. Experience and knowledge of power utility maintenance and/or operations. Detailed knowledge of mechanical engineering theory, design, and the operating mechanisms and parameters of hydro-generator and thermal units. Working knowledge of mechanical engineering codes, standards and regulations applicable to electrical utility generation facilities. Ability to work independently on engineering projects. Knowledge of project management processes and principles, with the ability to manage electric utility projects. Experience preparing project scopes, budgets and schedules and coordinating project execution. Ability to create engineering drawings and specifications and prepare cost estimates. Ability to prepare technical specifications, bid evaluations, construction contracts and requests for proposals. Strong decision-making skills with the ability to support projects through construction and field activities. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with outside agents. Self-motivated, versatile and able to thrive on a variety of work. Valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
