The Opportunity
McElhanney Ltd. is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Environmental Biologist to join our growing environmental team in Alberta. The successful candidate will be a key member of our environmental team with the ability to draw on support from over 50 environmental professionals within the company, with a wide range of expertise. The type and size of projects will vary from stand-alone environmental projects to integrated design engineering projects involving various disciplines.

Role Overview
In this role, you will work on a variety of projects including baseline data collection, development of environmental protection plans, and environmental monitoring plans for large multi-disciplinary construction projects with a passion for offering sustainable environmental solutions for your clients and local communities.

As an individual who thrives in a dynamic and fast paced environment, you will work closely with our environmental and engineering teams to support our client’s project needs. You understand the big picture and can help advise internal and external clients on project risks that have the potential to result in schedule delays, cost overruns, and future challenges, while maintaining a high level of environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities
  • All stages of environmental studies from proposal preparation through data collection, interpretation, and reporting
  • Pre-Disturbance Environmental Assessments and Biophysical Impact Assessments
  • Coordinating regulatory permitting for approvals, project reviews, authorizations, and wildlife/plant salvages
  • Design and implement terrestrial and aquatic habitat mitigation, compensation, and restoration measures
  • Coordinate and oversee environmental impact management and monitoring during project construction phases
  • Mentor junior and intermediate staff members of the environmental team
  • Coordinate subcontracting specialties as required
  • Being a champion of workplace safety, and preparing and adhering to site-specific health and safety plans
  • Providing support to other departments (survey, geotechnical engineering, land development, water resource engineering and contaminated Sites/environmental engineering) to learn about and develop a holistic approach to project execution
  • Provide environmental advice and solutions to guide design and assist with planning
  • Business development and client relations
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • 10-15+ years of relevant work experience; University degree in Biology or a related field
  • Registration in good standing as a P.Biol., a QAES and/or QWSP designation will be considered an asset
  • Experience should include proposal preparation, aquatic and terrestrial habitat assessments, wildlife assessment and monitoring, environmental monitoring, permitting, and reporting
  • Experience with rare plant assessments and species-at-risk identification and management will be an asset
  • Ability to work independently & in a team environment
  • Proven report writing experience, strong communication abilities, and regulatory (Federal, Provincial) approval experience
  • Experience liaising with First Nations and government agencies
  • Attention to detail and project management capabilities
  • Sound business acumen, client liaison skills, and a keen entrepreneurial spirit
  • Possession of a valid AB driver’s license is required at the time of hire
