The Role

As a Bridge Engineer, you play a vital role in the planning, design, and construction of bridges and other transportation structures that form the backbone of our infrastructure systems. Your expertise in structural engineering principles, materials science, and project management enables you to contribute to the safe, efficient, and sustainable development of transportation networks. From conceptual design to final inspection, you are responsible for ensuring the structural integrity, functionality, and longevity of bridges, while meeting regulatory standards and project requirements.

The ideal candidate will have the following background, skills and attributes:

  • Bachelor or Masters Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive design experience for public infrastructure projects involving bride size culverts, steel, and concrete bridge structures in Alberta and Western Canada.
  • Demonstrated experience with Alberta Transportation design guidelines and construction specifications.
  • Must be able to lead detailed design and contract preparation together with team member and as self-directed manner.
  • In-depth knowledge in Alberta Transportation standards and policies and Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA-S6).
  • Ability to provide construction liaison and act as Contract Administrator.
  • Ability to review and sign-off of technical design reports.
  • Sound understanding of other disciplines scope and ability to liaise.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have access to a vehicle with valid registration and insurance, including 3 year driver abstract.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare budgets and schedules, plan the work, and provide technical direction and oversight.
  • Manage project teams, control project budgets and schedules, and quality control of deliverables.
  • Complete preliminary design / bridge planning activities and deliverables.
  • Complete detailed structural design calculations and analysis.
  • Perform technical reviews of work prepared by colleagues for quality assurance purposes.
  • Develop and review engineering of new bridges and bridge rehabilitation design;
  • Produce project construction quantity and cost estimates, contract documents and specifications.
  • Provide assistance in the support and development of bridge group staff.
  • Assist team leadership with growing the bridge group and pursing new business opportunities and clients.
  • Provide engineering expertise and services related to the design, rehabilitation, evaluation, inspection of bridges, culverts, and other transportation structures.
  • Prepare and review cost estimates, specifications, tender documents, and reports.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other engineering disciplines including highway, foundation, environmental, drainage, and electrical.
  • Provide construction administration liaison and complete construction supervision and site inspections on an as-needed basis.
  • Maintain positive client relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
