The Dean's Office in the School of Architecture, Planning, & Landscape is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Production Designer.

Reporting to the Manager Operations, Administration & Facilities, the Production Designer will be responsible for turning concepts and design layouts into publish-ready artwork. In this role, the Production Designer is dedicated to building the local, national, and international profile and reputation of SAPL at the University of Calgary as a leading Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture school in Canada at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels that is deeply engaged with the broader community in teaching, learning and research. This ideal candidate is a self-starter who must be able to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Production Artist

  • Produce creative assets for communications initiatives including but not limited to; social media, digital marketing and paid advertising, e-mail, newsletters, brochures, presentations, webinars, and events.
  • Assist in preparing images, graphics, icons, and files for use in digital and print.
  • Interpret design tasks and incorporate feedback to deliver clean, well-organized artwork.
  • Responsible for ensuring all design deliverables are produced on time and to specifications.
  • Design and create assets while maintaining a high level of quality assurance and brand consistency.
  • Create, maintain, and organize a library of designs, resources, and assets to use for future projects.
  • Work within existing templates to produce creative content while assisting clients who use them as well.
  • Managing, organizing and preserving project assets by following appropriate processes.

Designer

  • Creative ideation, conceptualizing and execution for print and digital deliverables.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to gather project requirements and complete design requests.
  • Assist with providing technical and creative support for tools used by the department.
  • Draw from industry best practices, stay on top of trends, and actively review best-in-class approaches for design.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience as a production artist, graphic designer, or similar position.
  • Degree or diploma in design, fine arts, graphic arts, or related field.
  • Expert in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.
  • Proficient in other Adobe Creative Suite products and/or similar software considered an asset.
  • Strong portfolio that demonstrates work in a wide range of mediums and platforms.
  • Excellent creative instincts and a keen eye for composition, layout, spacing, and typography.
  • Fundamental knowledge of color theory, management and profiles for both print and digital.
  • Attention to detail and has a pixel perfect level of quality control.
  • Highly organized and process-oriented, with a team first approach and mentality.
  • Understanding of the print production process, pre-press, typesetting, file packaging, and quality assurance.
  • Familiarity designing for Microsoft Word and PowerPoint considered an asset.
  • A basic understanding of digital design, UX, and interactive is a plus.
  • Experience in a large, complex organization focused on efficient production of design assets.
