The Role

A Transportation Design Technologist plays a vital role in the development and implementation of transportation infrastructure projects. Their responsibilities typically include the preparation of design and tender packages including report preparation, quantity calculations, cost estimates, detailed plans and drawings, and preparing models for roads, highways, bridges, and other transportation systems. They collaborate closely with our team of engineers and technologists to ensure that designs meet regulatory standards, client requirements, and safety protocols. Additionally, they may conduct site visits, analyze data, and provide construction technical support to inform project decisions.

Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a working understanding of transportation design principles are essential for success in this role.

The ideal candidate will have the following background, skills and attributes:

  • Completion of technical diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or Engineering Design and Drafting Technology or an equivalent program.
  • Registered with ASET or equivalent as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.)
  • Minimum 5 to 10 years of progressive consulting experience completing transportation projects for Alberta Transportation & Economic Corridors or Municipal clients.
  • Demonstrated experience with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors design guidelines and construction specifications.
  • Ability to read and understand survey plans and drawings.
  • Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD and Civil 3D software would be considered a strong asset.
  • Excellent field negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Available to travel, evenings and weekends may be necessary.
  • Demonstrated abilities in multidisciplinary project teamwork and coordination.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem solving skills and ability to think creatively.
  • Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid work environment from an office or home setting.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have access to a vehicle with valid registration and insurance.
  • Provide a 3-year driver’s record.

Key Responsibilities:

As a member of the Western Canada Infrastructure team, you will be responsible for contributing to our project teams during design and construction project phases.

  • Completing geometric designs of highways, municipal roads, and intersection improvements, including new/greenfield and rehabilitation projects in a rural or urban setting.
  • Developing preliminary and detailed engineering deliverables including reports, plans, quantities, cost estimates, specifications, and contract/tender documents.
  • Coordinating project requirements with environmental, geotechnical, illumination, and land acquisition sub-consultants as necessary.
  • Assisting other transportation Engineers and Technologists, including reviewing and checking completed work against established standards.
  • Coordination and meeting set-up for internal and external meetings.
  • Interpreting and implementing standards from provincial and federal regulatory bodies.
  • Maintaining positive client relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborating with design teams within other operating locations in Alberta and Ontario.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment by complying with all safety codes, guidelines, and regulations forming our Health, Safety & Environmental management system.
  • Participate in all assigned Health and Safety training programs.
