Are you a research whiz? Do you love data and learning about a topic in great depth? The Agri-Food Waste Enhancement program is searching for a summer student to undertake a literature review and data mining project to help inform a database. The student research assistant will be a part of this team trying to do create value-added application for byproducts streams from the Agri-food sector employing the principles of circular economy. The student will also support product development efforts in the lab when needed. They will be exposed to various subject matter experts in the fields of biochemistry, data science and food product development and be able to build their collaboration and communications skills within a diverse project team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Literature review and data mining
  • Carry out general tasks and laboratory protocols including general housekeeping, experimental set up and take down, solution preparation, and basic analytical equipment maintenance.
  • Use analytical instrumentation to acquire data and compile data within Excel for presentation to team members and industry partners.
  • Participate in maintaining a safe laboratory environment by following standard operating procedures, proper chemical handling, and helping to update safety protocols.
  • Communicate results and observations effectively between project teams and industry partners as needed
  • Write reports/presentations summarizing the data obtained using Word and Power Point

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work full-time from May 1 to August 30, 2024
  • Must be enrolled at NAIT or other community college/polytechnic or university in Chemical Technology, Biological, Environmental Technology, Nanotechnology, Chemical Engineering Technology, or equivalent programs
  • A minimum of one year of demonstrated hands-on training or experience in a chemistry laboratory is a major asset
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, MS Teams is required
  • Knowledge of literature search databases will be an asset
  • Understanding of lab safety guidelines and best practices including WHMIS, and Occupational Health & Safety guidelines is a major asset

Remuneration: $1,267.05 - $1,572.39 bi-weekly, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation pay. (Classification - Student Research Assistant l)

This position is covered by the AUPE (Alberta Union of Provincial Employees) Collective Agreement.
