The Opportunity:
McElhanney has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated individual to join our team as a Project Engineer or Civil Engineering Technologist in Hinton or Edson, Alberta. This role is ideal for someone looking to grow their design and engineering experience by working on a wide variety of private and public engineering projects, including municipal improvements, transportation upgrades, subdivisions and National Parks infrastructure development. The successful candidate will use their strong technical skills on a variety of projects. This position is an opportunity to develop technical and management skills, that would advance the individual into project management and leadership within the Yellowhead Branch.

As this position is part of our Yellowhead Branch, preference will be given to candidates who are based in Hinton or Edson, AB. However, relocation assistance or a signing bonus is available for the successful candidate based on their level of experience.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Assist in the production of engineering designs and drawings that meet all client and approval agency requirements and standards for projects such as potable water, sanitation, stormwater management plans and drainage systems, roadway design and complete streets, multi-use pathways, and site grading
  • Transform preliminary concepts and sketches into engineering designs, plans and project informational requirements, using primarily Civil 3D, as well as other technical software as needed
  • Coordinate the preparation of documents required for approvals, prepare development and construction cost estimates and tender documents and contracts, and coordinate with other team members to ensure schedules, budgets and quality control standards are achieved
  • Identify field and design issues and facilitate corrective measures, think independently
  • Involvement in projects across Central and Northern Alberta, collaborating with other McElhanney Branches across the Region.

What You’ll Bring:
  • Degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role or Diploma in Civil Engineering or Drafting Technology with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role
  • Registration, or ability to register, with APEGA or ASET
  • Advanced proficiency in Civil 3D Software
  • Contract management and/or field inspection experience would be considered an asset
  • Field survey experience would be considered an asset
  • Excellent communication, client management, and relationship building skills
  • Attention to detail and excellent communication skills (verbal & written)
  • Ability to work independently and also within a busy and high-performing team
  • Willingness to travel within the region for project specific requirements
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license
This role is designated as a safety-sensitive position and completion of a pre-employment drug & alcohol and fitness for work testing is required.
