As a 4th class Power Engineer, bring your 3 years of experience to perform a variety of maintenance and repair functions on building, grounds and installations in areas such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC, while assisting in the safe and efficient operation of the physical plant. Your knowledge of the boiler and pressure vessel safety act ensures the safe monitoring, adjusting, testing and repairing of related equipment and safety devices. You will operate and assure readiness at all times of the building emergency systems such as fire alarm systems and emergency stand-by generators by performing inspections and tests. You will troubleshoot electrical circuits and make repairs within capabilities and maintain safe lighting throughout the entire physical plant. Your knowledge and experience will prepare you for the wide variety of tasks and services performed by the Maintenance Engineer.

Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor or designate, performs a variety of maintenance and repair functions on building, grounds and installations in areas such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC, and assists in the safe and efficient operation of the physical plant.
Responsibilities

  1. Operates, maintains and repairs the steam and hot water plant as required by boiler and pressure vessel safety act by monitoring, adjusting and testing of related equipment and safety devices. Performs chemical treatment and assures efficient operation of the plant. Logs all technical data and records fuel readings daily. Performs routine and demand maintenance on equipment such as pumps, motors, fans and cooling towers by replacing seals, bearings, filters and belts.
  2. Operates and assures readiness at all times of the building emergency systems such as fire alarm systems and emergency stand-by generators by performing inspections and tests. Takes appropriate action to maintain essential services during power failures and internal or external disasters.
  3. Monitors, maintains and repairs electrical systems and related equipment. Troubleshoots electrical circuits and makes repairs within capabilities. Maintains safe lighting throughout the entire physical plant.
  4. Answers service and emergency calls, assesses and performs repairs and calls in appropriate staff for skilled journeyman work as required.
  5. Performs electrical and mechanical repairs to equipment such as autoclaves, washers, sterilizers and dryers by replacing and/or repairing items such as drive units, electric motors and control valves, changing seals and bearings.
  6. Performs repairs on plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, water supply lines and waste lines including unplugging of toilets, drains and plaster traps. Maintains and adjusts all domestic water systems and related equipment.
  7. Maintains and adjusts HVAC controls to keep building within specified comfortable limits. Services and repairs pumps, compressors, ventilation fans, air conditioning and related equipment.
  8. Monitors, maintains and repairs medical gas systems, sterilizer equipment, stills and sanitizing washers and records daily oxygen consumption.
  9. Maintains and repairs building fabric such as walls, roofs, doors and windows.
  10. Performs emergency removal of snow and ice from entrances, walkways and service driveways for safety of visitors and staff.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Certificate of competency as a 4th class Power Engineer recognized by the Province of B.C.

Three years' recent related experience or an equivalent of education training and experience.
