Position Title: Designs Engineer

Team and Location: Parkland Refinery - Burnaby, BC

Salary Range: $77,500 /year - $116,000 / year

Position Summary:

As a member of the Designs Engineering team supporting the Refinery, the successful candidate will support the safe and reliable operation of mechanical equipment as well as management of small and medium sized construction projects. This involves equipment such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, compressors, pumps, process piping, and pipelines. Work will include engineering of on-the-run repairs, as well as maintenance turnaround installations. The candidate is also responsible for managing all aspects of engineering and construction projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Acting as unit mechanical engineer supporting Operations, Maintenance, Inspections, Reliability, and Field Construction groups.
  • Steward unit reliability improvements and equipment repairs.
  • Participate in team meetings representing Design Engineering on your unit.
  • Perform fitness for service evaluations per API 579/ASME FFS-1 for piping and pressure vessels.
  • Perform gasket calculations per ASME PCC-1, minimum pressurization temperature evaluations and piping stress analysis in CAESAR II.
  • Troubleshoot unit/equipment problems with Process engineers.
  • Occasionally, off-hours support of unexpected/discovery issues is expected.
  • Assisting in plant shutdowns found-work including field inspection work.
  • Completing small projects using the Management of Change (MOC) process.
  • Project identification and scoping, including estimation of labour and material costs.
  • Engineering design of equipment, considering safety, operability, and environmental impact.
  • Preparation of specifications for construction and equipment purchases.
  • Job supervision and planning including budgeting.
  • Cost and schedule and change request monitoring and management.
  • Completion of constructability analysis & participation in Hazards and Operability (HAZOP) and Layers of Protection (LOPA) studies.
  • Participating in unit/equipment life cycle analysis and equipment end of life assessments.
  • Turnover and start-up of facilities.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Applied Science/Engineering specializing in Mechanical, Integrated, or Materials Engineering is required.
  • Registration with EGBC as E.I.T. or P.Eng. is required. P.Eng's in this position are expected to authenticate engineering deliverables in according with EGBC Professional Management Guidelines and Parkland's PPMP.
  • 2 - 6 years of related engineering experience for heavy industrial facilities is required.
  • Prior experience working in an oil and gas plant environment is required.
  • Awareness of industry codes and standards including ASME VIII, B31.3, CSA B51, ASME PCC-1 & 2, API 579/ASME FFS-1, CSA Z662, API 650/653. Working knowledge of these codes is an asset.
  • Resourceful and effective at solving technical problems, at times with limited information;
  • Capable in design software including Solidworks, with experience creating and checking fabrication drawings including piping isometrics.
  • Knowledge of stress analysis in FEA; experience in Codeware INSPECT and CAESAR II is an asset.
  • Proficient at Excel in performing calculations and processing large amounts of data.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills is required; an ability to understand the needs of others in the team.
  • Strong organization skills in managing concurrent and conflicting priorities; time management.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, work well within a team environment.
