Grizzly Bear Refuge Interpretive Guide


Grizzly Bear Refuge (GBR) Interpretive Guides conduct guided public tours of the Kicking Horse Grizzly Bear Refuge contributing to the education and enlightenment of the general public about grizzly bear biology and behaviour. Interpretive Guides also assist the GBR Manager and Shift Leads in maintaining the well-being of the Boo, the grizzly bear and his habitat, greet and engage with guests, and enforce safety measures for visitors and staff.


You will:


· Conduct interpretive tours for the public about grizzly bear biology, behaviour, the history of GBR, and human-wildlife coexistence initiatives. Special tours of a similar nature may also be required for school groups and other private groups.

· Assist the GBR Manager and Shift Leads in providing care for Boo, the grizzly bear, through the provision of food, water, hygiene, psychological enrichment, surveys, and habitat improvement.

· Maintain database of bear behaviour, habitat statistics, procedural matters, and other factors so it is accessible for GBR staff, KHMR management, and provincial officials.

· Greet guests coming to the Grizzly Bear Refuge via the Catamount Mid Station.

· Perform daily perimeter checks around the habitat.

· Ensure that all applicable wildlife protocols, procedures, and regulations are followed.

· Other duties as required.


You have:


· Previous experience in the area of public education program delivery or wildlife care

· Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with the public and communicate in and engaging and knowledgeable manner

· Passion for conservation, wildlife management, and/or ideals of the Refuge

· Class 5 Driver's Licence

· Previous experience using MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

· Post secondary degree, certificate or diploma in Biology or related discipline-an asset.

· Previous experience working directly with wildlife or wildlife program-an asset.

· Specific knowledge of bear biology-an asset

Working Conditions:

· Must be able to work flexible shifts. Weekend work required.

· Primarily outdoor work in all-weather mountain conditions.

· Limited but occasional office work.

· Manual labour at the refuge including lifting, shovelling, raking, pruning, brushing, and fence maintenance.

· Must be physically capable of performing manual labour, standing for prolonged periods, walking over rough terrain, interacting with wildlife, and working in all weather conditions.

· Possible exposure to severe mountain weather conditions for extended periods of time (heat, rain, insects, wind, cold, snow, etc.).
