Description

The Assistant Cook supports the Food Services Supervisor in preparing and implementing meals at the camp. This role involves food preparation and cooking, cleaning of equipment, daily logging, and checks. Key skills for this role include flexibility, a passion for cooking, the ability to work within a team, and awareness of dietary and allergy standards.

HOURS:

  • 40 hours per week, daily schedule will vary as per supervisor

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accountabilities:

  • Assist in the main preparation of food for campers, staff, and volunteers, as well as other kitchen duties, as required by the Head Cook.
  • Prepare meals according to the developed menus and provide suggestions to menu planning
  • Maintain cleaning of equipment
  • Complete daily logging and checks
  • Share responsibility for practicing economy in the use of food.
  • Adhere to the scheduled times for food service.
  • Ensure food handling, preparation, and storage is conducted according to food safe standards.
  • Responsible for supporting the Food Services Supervisor in the preparation of meals for staff, campers, and volunteers.
  • Assist the Head Cook in receiving, checking, and storing food orders.
  • Assist in the constant cleanliness and sanitation of freezers, walk-in fridges, stoves, and food preparation surfaces.
  • At the end of the summer camping season, assist the Head Cook in making an inventory of supplies and food; prepare all food supplies for storage.

General Responsibilites:

  • Work within the total camping program and cooperate with other staff members.
  • Be familiar with all procedures and resources.
  • Maintain a responsible level of maturity and leadership.
  • Be available to attend all staff devotions and meetings, as kitchen schedule allows.
  • Work in compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and
  • safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the highest health and safety standards for all campers, volunteers, Lower Camp, and staff
  • Maintain and support the purpose of camping ministries by helping campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completed grade 12, plus specialized courses.
  • Food Safe - Level 1 required, Food Safe - Level 2 an asset
  • WHIMIS
  • Standard First Aid with CPR - C
  • OFA Level 3 an asset
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

  • A Minimum of 3 months of prior related experience cooking for large groups is required; preference is given to those with camp experience.
  • Sound knowledge of food safety standards and procedures.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to adapt to change.
  • Ability to learn quickly and use initiative.
