Job Summary
This position provides support to the Facilities Services Team. The Facilities Services Supervisor leads the Grounds Maintenance, Power Plant, and Trades teams and exercises considerable independence of action and judgement. The incumbent is responsible for communicating and working in a collaborative manner with the staff, other Facilities Services Divisions, the Facilities Services Management Team and the College community to ensure quality, timely, and reliable service, and related projects and initiatives are successfully completed.
Specific Duties
  • Provide supervision, direction, guidance and coaching to the facilities services operational staff.
  • Monitor quality of work performed and productivity of all facilities services staff and provide positive constructive feedback to ensure safety, quality and productivity expectations are achieved.
  • Ensure staff receive orientation, on-going training, and instruction.
  • Ensure staff understand and follow safety regulations and safe work practices.
  • Within the work order system, prepare, review, and issue work orders and work plans for the operational staff teams.
  • Ensure all work orders are carried out according to priority, predetermined procedures, work schedules and other schedules as approved by Facilities Services Management.
  • Keep and report records of time and costs of all work performed by staff.
  • Prepare work schedules and keep schedules current. May be required to assist in approving leave forms and scheduling vacation time for staff.
  • Provide input into and assist with preparing staff appraisals and progress reports.
  • Communicate with contractors and suppliers to obtain pricing, schedule services, order supplies, confirm work is successfully completed, and confirm supplies are delivered on time.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment and restock as required.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance and compliance with all regulatory codes, safety regulations, and legislation.
  • Perform and/or assist in installation, maintenance and repairs of all parts of buildings and grounds, including but not limited to soft and hard landscaping, interior/exterior architectural building assemblies and finish systems, carpentry, window and door assemblies, hardware, locks/keys/cylinders, paint, flooring, snow and ice removal, de-icing and sanding, driving duties and general clean-up.
  • Assist with emergency procedures including but not limited to fire alarms and emergency evacuation.
  • Maintain and ensure preventative maintenance of fleet vehicles.
  • Ensure proper care, maintenance, and inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out with the least amount of disruption to affected areas and the college community.
  • Make recommendations to Facilities Services Management on best courses of action to resolve issues, and ways to improve safety, reduce maintenance requirements, reduce costs, save time, reduce energy usage, increase service quality, increase productivity, etc.
  • May be required to be on call for emergencies and equipment failure.
  • Keep current with industry/news changes and emerging techniques and technology.
  • Assist other Facilities Services staff and perform other related duties as directed by Facilities Services Management.
  • Operates and services building/power plant equipment and systems (e.g. water softener, HAVC, automated systems, fire systems, call systems, emergency power, etc.) all within code requirements.
  • Researches, evaluates and reviews new equipment.
  • Develops installation plans for new equipment.
  • Keep all mechanical rooms, power plant, workshops, and storage areas organized and orderly.
  • Monitor that appropriate permits are obtained, appropriate inspections are requested, licensing is maintained, and all records are kept to meet regulatory requirements.
  • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
  • You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Grade 12.
  • Journey Person or 4th class Power Engineer.
  • Scissor-lift, fork-lift, boom-lift, tool cat certification to operate.
  • 5 years or more Institutional building experience including supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive and effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience in building maintenance and HVAC systems.
  • Formal training and experience with DDC equipment, preferred.
  • Formal training and experience with energy management systems, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the BC Safety Standards Act concerning boilers, pressure vessels, and refrigeration safety, and building codes, preferred.
  • Certification for Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
  • WHIMIS certification.
  • Experience in operating AutoCAD software is an asset.
  • Proficiency in operating Microsoft Office and maintenance management software.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract.
  • May be required to obtain level 2 Occupational First Aid certification.
  • Criminal Record Check maybe required.
  • Physical ability to complete the job demands.
