We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to fill the position of Technology Development Engineer within our Carbon Engineering group based in Squamish, B.C., Canada.

The Technology Development Engineer will be accountable for ensuring the necessary systems, procedures, and controls, as well as a proper and safe design, are in place for laboratory, bench, and pilot scale test equipment and execution under the direction of the Technology Development Director of Low Carbon Ventures.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain protection of the environment and the health and safety of our employees, customers, and the communities in which we operate and/or transport our products as our highest priority
  • Implement and maintain safe work procedures for Technology Development equipment and experiments
  • Design and construct test equipment at the laboratory, bench, or pilot scales
  • Use appropriate design calculations to develop or selecting new equipment or instrumentation, and if applicable, identify third party consultants for technical review or independent design consultation
  • Perform experiments at the laboratory, bench, or pilot scales
  • Perform standard and unique analytical methods
  • Process and analyze experimental data using appropriate statistical methods
  • Define the key questions that need to be answered to gain a strong fundamental understanding of new concepts, and plan, design, and execute the experiments required to answer them
  • Interpret the results and communicate the learnings in both written and verbal formats to a diverse audience to support rigorous, data-driven decision making
  • Use the learnings to define the logical next steps for the project

Qualifications
Education & Requirements:
  • B.Sc. (minimum) or M.Sc./PhD (preferred) in Chemical Engineering (preferred), Chemistry, or related disciplines
  • Ability to work in Canada a must
  • Ability to travel to US is a requirement

Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an academic or industrial laboratory environment with a focus on experiment setup, test execution, and data analysis
  • Experience in industrial process chemistry is a plus
  • Experience in reaction kinetics experimentation and modelling is a plus

Skills and Competencies:
  • A demonstrated mechanical aptitude
  • Understand core scientific principles including general process chemistry fundamentals, mass transfer, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics
  • Knowledge of analytical methods specifically related to wet chemistry, spectroscopic, crystallographic and gravimetric techniques
  • Inorganic and organic synthetic techniques
  • Statistical methods and regression analysis
  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to read, write, and speak in English
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Physical requirements - Must be able to lift 40 lbs, climb ladders and stairs. Walking, bending, stooping is required. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including the use of a respirator. Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
