If you answered yes, our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) site located near Pinawa, Manitoba is looking for a Civil Engineer. The Civil Engineer will provide support for the development of preliminary, conceptual and detailed design of civil structures, as well as subject matter expert (SME) support for civil and structural design work, including project engineering and infrastructure demolition engineering activities that may present itself during the execution of decommissioning or environmental remediation projects at CNL. What will you be doing?

· Interpreting design drawings, documents, data collected from field visits and client’s needs.

· Developing innovative and safe solutions to Civil Engineering challenges that may arise during the field season. Safe compensatory measures also need to be part of the solution portfolio.

· Interpreting clients’ needs and make recommendations as to alternatives to satisfy the need and the recommended solution and prepare the final solution (design, report).

· Devising new approaches, applies existing criteria in new manners and draws conclusions from comparative situations.

· Accepting recommendations as technically accurate and feasible.

· Acting as a mentor to other engineers.

· Providing the necessary Civil/Structural Engineering Expert advice and recommendations to the Engineering Manager for decision and guidance.

· Evaluating existing civil, structural, and architectural design to accommodate safe and efficient demolition of infrastructure or project modifications.

· Contributing to the development of conceptual, preliminary and detailed design of structures, other infrastructure and decommissioning.

· Preparing design documents, design requirements, design descriptions, technical specifications, and calculations, tendering documents, standards, procedures and analyses reports.

· Reviewing and/or recommend technical specification for Civil/Structural Engineering equipment, tests, and processes/procedures.

· Providing engineering support during the modification, decommissioning and demolition phases of projects.

· Providing subject matter expert review and acceptance of modification, project and demolition designs prepared by outside agencies.

· Supervising technical staff and/or junior staff.

· Liaising with external contractors and internal Project Supervisors.

· Developing engineering specifications and standards facilitating a consistent design approach.

· Other duties as assigned by manager.

What we are looking for:

Someone who has the ability to:

· Membership in or eligible for membership within the Engineers Geoscientists of Manitoba (EGM) as a Registered Professional Engineer.

Experience

Sound knowledge of infrastructure demolition engineering and more than 10 years of significant related experience in the areas of:

· Building design using steel, masonry, timber and reinforced concrete.

· CSA S350-M1980, Code of Practice for Safety in Demolition of Structures.

· The guidelines by The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba (APEGM) for demolition of buildings and structures.

· Specifications from Manitoba Infrastructure and transportation 1020 on demolition of buildings and structures, engineered plans and documents described therein.

· CSA-A23” Design of Concrete Structures.

· CSA-16.01 “Limit States Design of Steel Structures.

· CSA-O86-14 “Engineering Design in Wood.

· CSA-S304 “Masonry Design for Buildings (limit state design).

· Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) – mostly for dealing with the production and management of generated waste, hazardous waste, fumes/dust/sediment, etc.

· Landfill design and construction.

· Road design and construction.

  • Sound knowledge of the National Building Code and National Fire Code and other relevant codes and standards used in the design, construction, and commissioning of nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.

· Supervisory and project management experience.

· Knowledge of Design Engineering practices, organization and quality assurance processes, Engineering Change Control and Configuration Management.

· Ability to exercise sound judgment in technical matters, to routinely solve technical problems and to make independent decisions.

· Demonstrated performance in providing engineering oversight to various sizes of jobs.

· Knowledge of CNL's engineering practices, organization and quality management program.

· Experienced in the technical procurement process, including supplier qualification reviews, bid evaluations, review and acceptance of technical deliverables; and monitoring contractor performance vs. technical specifications.

· Demonstrated knowledge of CSA N286/N285 quality standards.

· Knowledge of radiation protection (RP) standards and CRL RP practices.

Education

· Bachelor (Honours) degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from a recognized university of recognized standing.

Security Eligibility Requirement

· Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of three (3) years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security”.

Working Conditions:

· Hearing protection usage required for occasional visits to noisy construction/demolition environments.

· Walking and navigating a construction and demolition environment with required personal protective equipment (safety boots, hard hats, safety glasses and reflective clothing).

· Combination of office work/field work.

· Occasional controlled exposure to nuclear radiation and industrial hazards due to construction/demolition site visits.
