DUTIES

Reporting to the Laboratory Services Supervisor, the Facilities Services Technician (FST) is responsible, on an after-hours shift basis (nights, weekends, holidays, University closures), for systems monitoring and caretaker work related to the Department of Ocean Sciences’ buildings, laboratories, and live animal facilities. The successful candidate will conduct physical rounds to monitor ongoing experiments and equipment to ensure the integrity of experimental parameters and stored samples. In cooperation with the Facilities Management utilities annex, the FST will also monitor facility systems via an electronic building information system (EBI) to ensure the integrity of water supply and various building functions. Other duties include conducting regular and special checks of all live animal holding facilities and laboratories; providing system adjustments and reporting any situations likely to lead to flooding, facility damage, or loss of animals or equipment; detecting electrical interruptions and properly resetting laboratory equipment, ultralow freezers, and water treatment equipment following these events; performing light animal care duties such as feeding larval fish and enriching live feed cultures; admitting pass holders to the buildings after hours; reporting after­hours issues to Principle Investigators/designates, Facilities Management, and Department of Ocean Sciences on-call personnel as appropriate; and performing other related duties as required. Weekday overnight shift coverage is 14 hours; weekend shifts are 12 hours; and holiday shifts are 10 hours.

This position will share the leave coverage for three full-time Facilities Services Technicians and one part-time Facilities Services Technician for annual leave, sick and family leave, statutory holidays and other University closures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (1-3 years) in the performance of caretaker work in a non-medical research environment including some experience in the care and handling of live animals; graduation from high school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. The ability to multi-task and work alone with minimal supervision; effective communication and problem solving skills; and computer use are required. General knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical aptitude would be definite assets.

SALARY $25.34 - $29.73 per hour (CUPE Local 1615)
