The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland is North America's most comprehensive marine institute dedicated to education, training, applied research, industrial response, and technology transfer in support of oceans industries.

The Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER) is a research and training unit created within the Marine Institute's School of Fisheries that focuses on fisheries science and fisheries management. The unit conducts scientific research focusing on Newfoundland and Labrador fisheries and ecosystems, including their stocks and their sustainability. CFER interacts and forms a conduit to both provincial and federal research activities and management, including stock and ecosystem assessments.

DUTIES
Coastal Restoration Research Support: Lead field support for coastal restoration projects in Placentia Bay, involving preparation, logistics, and the execution of research initiatives. This will require not only expertise in boat operations but also a deep understanding of coastal ecosystem dynamics and conservation strategies.

Data Collection and Analysis: Participate in the collection and analysis of biological samples and data related to fisheries science. This includes operating technical equipment, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of data collected during field operations, and contributing to research reports and publications.

Boat Operations and Safety: Act as the primary operator for coastal research vessels, ensuring all operations comply with Transport Canada regulations and safety standards. This role requires comprehensive knowledge and experience in small boat handling, particularly in the challenging conditions of Placentia Bay.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with a diverse team of researchers, leveraging expertise in marine biology and field research to advance the goals of the CFER. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to significant research projects, enhancing the sustainability of marine ecosystems and fisheries.

QUALIFICATIONS
A Master's degree in marine biology, environmental science, or a related field, or equivalent experience in marine field research. Experience or familiarity with Placentia Bay's marine environment and coastal restoration efforts; Valid Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) and SDV-BS certificate; Significant experience in boat handling, with a strong emphasis on safety and emergency procedures; Significant experience in trailering a boat, including loading and unloading the vessel in all conditions; Must have, or be able to obtain a Class 5 Weight Alteration Road Test though Motor Vehicle Registration and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Experience with remote-operated vehicles, conductivity temperature and depth (CTD) equipment, ArcGIS, drone operations, and possession of MED A1 certification will be considered assets. Training will be provided as necessary.

SALARY: $64,039 - $83,161 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel V) [NAPE Local 7405]
