The Opportunity

The Emera Safety and Environment team has a principal accountability to act as the Company’s authority on matters of safety and environmental policy, governance, planning and due diligence. The team supports Emera in its vision to achieve World Class Safety where no one gets hurt in our business. On environment the team supports Emera in achieving its climate goals and net zero vision and works with all of its affiliates to achieve our environmental obligations and objectives and enhance environmental performance.

Our role on safety and environment specifically involves ensuring that the company’s management system requirements are established, implemented, and maintained. Reporting to the Director, Environment, this position will involve supporting the safety and environmental assurance function by actively monitoring the compliance of Emera’s safety and environmental management systems enterprise wide and participating in related assurance activities, such as the company’s safety and environmental auditing and compliance program. As well, it will involve providing technical and policy assistance on various safety and environmental initiatives and plans and implement and track programs that support corporate governance for Emera and its affiliates.

Key elements of this role include:

  • Assist in the execution of the safety and environmental audit program across all Emera companies. This will include, but not be limited to, participating in and leading various audits within Emera and its subsidiaries.
  • Evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls to mitigate risks and assess compliance with corporate and subsidiary safety and environmental policies & procedures, standards, programs as well as provincial, federal & state laws and applicable safety and environmental regulations.
  • Providing recommendations and advice to senior management and assisting the team in preparing the Emera executive and Board reports.
  • Assisting with the maintenance and development of the Emera’s safety and environmental management systems to enhance safety and environmental performance, fulfill compliance obligations and complete safety and environmental objectives. This will involve leading various continual improvement initiatives; working with Emera affiliates on various aspects of safety and environmental management systems, safety, and environment performance; and assisting with the preparation of various company internal and external reports.
  • Assess and determine how legislation and various legislative initiatives are evolving, develop related communications to internal stakeholders and provide advice on developing/improving programs to address identified gaps and opportunities.
  • Support the implementation and operation of the Cority Safety and Environment Digital Platform.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Science, Engineering or Audit related discipline(s).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in safety, environment, compliance and/or auditing.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives.
  • Capable of collaborating across various corporate teams, and geographic areas, to build and maintain strong working relationships.
  • Electricity or Gas utility (or equivalent) operational experience is considered an asset.
  • A strong understanding of Safety and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 45001, ISO 14001) and auditing techniques (e.g., ISO 19011) is considered an asset.
  • Other combinations of related education and experience may be considered.
  • A valid drivers license is required. Travel to Emera locations will be a necessary part of the role.
