About Us


Maintaining the provincial dykeland infrastructure is no small job. We're recruiting for a Crewman- Maintenance Worker like you to help our Province achieve support for the maintenance of this infrastructure.

The Land Protection and Field Services Section of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture is responsible for the Nova Scotia Dykeland System comprised of 81 agricultural marshes, 240 km of dykes, 250 aboiteaux, and 17,000 hectares of protected land. In addition to protecting highly productive agricultural land, the dyke system protects high value assets such as highways, communities, railways, windmills and cultural sites. This provincial dykeland system is considered critical infrastructure.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Assist with inspections and repairs of dykes and aboiteaux structures. For example, repair aboiteau gates and remove debris from flood control structures;
  • Operating, servicing, maintaining and repairing equipment and structures (fabrication of parts, minor welding, basic construction);
  • Experience following an OHS program, including documentation;
  • Cutting and trimming trees and brush using chainsaws, gas powered trimmers and hand pruners to maintain drainage ditches and aboiteau structures;
  • Application of herbicide and deciduous tree control using backpack sprayers and boom sprayer;
  • Operation of farm tractors for mowing, raking, seeding dykes and marshlands and practical knowledge of working with heavy equipment;
  • Considerable physical activity in difficult conditions,
  • Work in varying weather conditions and wet/cold environments

Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a minimum of two (2) years of related experience, including work in:

  • General carpentry, building and grounds maintenance, general machine maintenance, use of tractors, ride-on mowers, push mowers, string trimmers, hand or power tools and janitorial or custodial duties.

You have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

A valid NS Class 5 Drivers License (or equivalent) is required.

This is a permanent, seasonal employment opportunity for the period between April and November. Pay Grade: MOS 07

Salary Range: $1,645.29 - $1,686.75 Bi-Weekly
