Position Summary:

Sofina Foods is currently seeking a Skilled Trades - Millwright Apprentice in an accredited trades program that will provide a 433A certification upon completion for our processing facility in Brampton, Ontario. The successful candidate must be able to work all shifts, including overtime as required.

The Millwright Apprentices' prime responsibility is to work with our maintenance team and assist with troubleshooting and diagnosing of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and minor electrical problems, of our packaging and process equipment, safely and efficiently. The Apprentice will also help with general building maintenance, repairs and installation, preventative maintenance, and continuous improvement projects, under the guidance of Journeyman.

Responsibilities:

  • As part of a formal skilled trades training program, assists licensed site Mechanics (Millwrights) to learn and develop mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills in a manufacturing environment, under direct guidance.
  • The Apprentice will be required to attend and successfully complete all required classes, to build basic mechanical skills and knowledge to qualify as an Industrial Mechanic (Millwright). Learns and understands the protocols of working safely with mechanical equipment and other energy sources with industrial equipment.
  • Completes all required on the job training hours, within the apprenticeship time period,
  • Practice a "safety first" policy by wearing personal protective equipment and following lockout procedures as required, and by reporting immediately hazards and defective equipment promptly,
  • Comply with all Health & Safety, HACCP, BRC and Good Manufacturing Practices,
  • Seek guidance and ask questions to enhance technical knowledge and problem-solving skills,
  • Maintain detailed records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on tasks,
  • Ensure all necessary documentation is completed accurately and promptly.

Quality

  • Learns and applies high standards of workmanship and craftsmanship, to all tasks performed,
  • Support equipment uptime and downtime failure analysis.
  • Performs supervised work in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals and specifications using various tools, measuring, and testing instruments.
  • Prepare work orders using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)
  • Provide feedback into the Preventive Maintenance system.
  • Follows all process documentation and quality procedures.
  • Raises issues to minimize cost and quality exposures.
  • Performs quality inspections.

Delivery

  • Repairs and maintains manufacturing equipment and other miscellaneous duties, within their capabilities.
  • Assists with preventive, emergency, corrective and predictive maintenance activities.
  • Maintains clean and orderly work area (5S), including routine housekeeping and machine cleaning tasks.
  • Identify and reduce manufacturing constraints.
  • Solve problems and improve processes.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities.

Teamwork

  • Communicates effectively with all maintenance team members and with all support teams.
  • Completes training and personal development, in line with business requirements, in a timely manner.

Requirements:

  • Aptitude and/or Qualification Testing will be required and administered, as part of the candidate selection process
  • As per the CBA, candidates must provide written documentation from the program coordinator or proof of license upon selection.
  • Must be currently enrolled in the formal apprenticeship program with in-school training completed (720 hours).
  • Candidate scoring and selection will be based on test results to assess skill and ability in accordance with the Collective Agreement
  • Minimum High school diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent (official Diploma / Transcript required as proof)
  • Must be committed to completing the formal apprenticeship training program (approximately 5 years), consisting of the schooling program (720 hrs.), the on-the-job training program (8,000 hrs.) and certification testing involved.
  • Basic understanding of electrical concepts and principles is beneficial.
  • Good manual dexterity and physical fitness to perform tasks in various work environments.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well within a team.
  • Willingness to learn, take initiative, and follow instructions diligently.
  • Must have a clean HR record to be considered for an apprenticeship, including attendance (tardiness) and performance (including corrective action)
  • Must be flexible and willing to work flexible shifts or times (including weekends), as required.
  • Practical experience working with electrical/mechanical systems and equipment would be an asset.
  • Overall plant knowledge of Facilities and/or Production Equipment would be an asset.
  • Must maintain a safe working environment by following all company rules and OSHA safety standards.
  • Good understanding and adherence to 5S practices will be mandatory.
  • Must have Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • High degree of workmanship and takes pride in doing a good job.
  • Must be willing to follow instructions, be self-motivated, hardworking, and energetic.
  • Good organizational and reasoning skills would be an asset.
  • Have positive attitude and be a Team worker.
  • Basic Computer skills would be an asset.
