If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you! Our Chalk River location is looking for a Certified Industrial Hygienist to develop, revise and implement industrial hygiene programs, procedures and instructions within ERM.

What will you be doing !

  • Completing training, mentoring, and apprenticing work with IH staff and complete continuous quality monitoring of work practices of IH staff to ensure appropriate quality and consistency.
  • Developing, revising and implementing industrial hygiene programs, procedures and instructions within ERM in consultation with Industrial hygiene Central Services.
  • Identifying and evaluating methods to control hazards, such as engineering controls, administrative controls, and protective equipment.
  • Providing technical support and subject matter expertise to project planning teams and field operations for ERM projects.
  • Conducting industrial hygiene audits and site assessments.
  • Developing sampling plans for noise and biological and chemical substances. Conducting industrial hygiene monitoring if required.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert within the ERM OSH team.
  • Identifying gaps between current ERM practices and company programs, procedures, regulatory requirements, industry standards and best practices related to Industrial Hygiene issues.
  • Attending designated meetings and work with a diverse group of internal and external clients.
  • Providing program oversight and input to continuous improvement assessment.
  • Providing IH support to the project by maintaining visible presence to the field performing regular site visits.
  • Assisting in the coaching, mentoring and implementation of the IH programs in the field assisting project teams and contractors as needed through coaching, mentoring, and relationship building.
  • Regularly reviewing and be familiar with all applicable legislation and applicable standards, to ensure compliance.
  • Proactively recognizing and encouraging positive workplace IH practices, and compliance to program and legislative requirements by project delivery personnel and contractors.
  • Providing timely customer service with credible and expert response to support requests.
  • Utilizing subject matter expertise to complete task or comprehensive project risk assessments, hazard assessments, and develop safety work procedures in support of CNL's Integrated Work Control program and Engineering Change Control programs when required.
  • Documenting observations pertaining to their work oversight activities including entering/transcribing oversight information in CNL's various recordkeeping and information management systems according to established requirements.
  • Undertaking and successfully completing various CNL internal training programs relevant to this position.
  • Directing, implementing and monitoring required engineering controls, work practice, personal protective equipment and respirators to eliminate or reduce physical, biological and chemical exposures with the support and direction of D&ER Manager.
  • Providing line managers and employees with survey reports indicating the results, field observations and recommendations (control measures, personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protection needs if relevant)
  • Analyzing and Interpreting IH monitoring data, work plans, and reports in order to access necessary controls and take further action.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of Safety Data Sheets, chemical Inventories and exposure databases.
  • Participating in inspections, audits and program reviews.
  • Conducting research as assigned and compiling summary information for internal reports.
  • Participating in internal and external training courses as required.
  • Assuming personal responsibility and is accountable for maintaining current skills, professional development and professional certifications by attending all training required by the site, viewing assigned videos, reading articles and participating in seminars as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

      • Be tactful and diplomatic, able to work effectively with employees, contractors and line management and provide prompt, clear and cencise guidance as required.
      • Effectively handle and diffuse difficult situations real time with internal and external clients.
      • Highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision, punctual and dependable.
      • Work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs.
      • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
    • Experience:
      • Minimum of six years of experience in industrial hygiene, preferably in the environment remediation, nuclear or chemical sectors.
      • Membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
      • Experience in developing occupational health and industrial hygiene programs and procedures.
      • Good understanding of the occupational health and safety legislation, both in federal and provincial jurisdictions.
      • Familiar with IH laboratory analysis and direct reading instruments.
      • Advanced level of computer skills desired with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
      • Extensive knowledge in occupational health and industrial hygiene standards, guidelines and best practices from Federal and Ontario (or other provincial) governments, CSA, ANSI, NIOSH, ACGIH, AIHA, ASHRAE, US EPA and other recognized organizations.
      • Expert knowledge of industrial hygiene in areas of asbestos building management, asbestos inventory, asbestos abatement, lead removal, silica, perchlorates, hazardous products/WHMIS, noise, heat-stress, confined space entry and rescue, personal protective equipment and clothing (PPE&C), risk assessments, air monitoring, ventilation evaluation, noise assessments, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, indoor air quality and physical hazards.
      • Extensive technical & practical Industrial Hygiene knowledge, including competent person and/or train-the trainer credentials and IH laboratory analysis and direct reading instruments.
      • Working level knowledge of occupational health & safety legislation relating to general operational system, construction, waste operations, environment remediation and demolition environments.
    • Education:
      • Minimum Honours Bachelor's Science Degree, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Degree or related disciplines such as Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or Applied Science from a university of recognized standing.
      • Membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
      • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) designation. Or if no designation, then must be capable and willing to obtain within a reasonable period of time.
    • Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.

      Working Conditions :

      • Field presence is required in all weather conditions with flexible time availability to work extended hours when required.
      • Ability to be physically active (standing, walking) for up to 12 hrs a day. Able to manage stairs, ladders and other egress equipment to enter all site and building areas including confined space.
      • Able to use personal protective equipment including a respirator as required.
      • Extensive walking on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
      • Combination of office based and field level work, including work outdoors in inclement weather and temperatures ranging from +30C to -40C.
      • Prolonged periods of sedentary office work when preparing reports and other documents.
      • Operational and decommissioning environments - i.e.; laboratories, workshops, confined spaces, heights, etc., laboratory settings, offices, construction sites, open fields, and possible wildlife exposure.
      • May be required to perform overtime.
      • Work in both radiologically active and non-active environments.

          This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL's Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee.
