Description

The Community Program Coordinator is responsible for the implementation, instruction, and coordination of a limited range of community-based programs and food bank operations in accordance with the Salvation Army mission, values, and standards. The incumbent may be responsible for providing support and direction of volunteers in a range of community-based programs and seasonal staffing requirements within established guidelines, when required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Program Development & Delivery

  • Give oversight to specific community ministries and programs, ensuring ministry objectives are consistently accomplished and applied to all program initiatives and where applicable link community members to the church family and church programs wherever possible.
  • Coordinate and oversee various community outreach programs i.e., Christmas Assistance Program, ELS classes, Community Dinner, Community Gardens, Life-skills Development Classes, etc.
  • Conduct client intakes, which includes assessing needs & determining how we can best assist our clients.
  • May oversee the Christmas Kettle Campaign and recruit necessary support staff as required.
  • Research and develop materials necessary to supplement the curriculum for all new community ministries programming.
  • Create engaging activities for the clients to participate in and develop relationships.
  • Network and refer to The Salvation Army or community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program, when necessary.
  • Actively promote Leamington Community and Family Services programs within the community.
  • Support the recruitment and registration of children and youth for Salvation Army provincial camping programs and strive to develop connection with these families.
  • Follow up with children/youth who attend Salvation Army summer camp programs, including their families, in order to build relationships and establish active links with the church and its mission and ministries.
  • Conduct a community needs assessment in Leamington to determine service gaps and opportunities and review client feedback to determine potential alternate programing and develop a strategy for the implementation of such programs, present recommendations for potential new outreach programs to Ministry Unit Leaders.
  • Recommendations are to be relevant to the needs of the community, support the development of holistic relationships, and be in keeping with the mission and vision of the Salvation Army.
  • Responsible for the oversight and coordination of the Leamington Foodbank operation; this may include but not limited to coordinating food procurement, receipt of donations, re-packaging for the Food Bank.
  • Responsible for making sure any concerns with maintenance and general cleanliness of the Food Bank are forwarded to Ministry Unit Leader.
  • Attend inter-agency and other social service agency community groups as directed.

Supervision

  • May recruit new volunteers and provide oversight, guidance, coaching and direction to volunteers.
  • Assist in ensuring volunteer safety, and adherence to all health and safety standards.
  • May ensure that volunteer documentation, training, and certifications are up to date.

Administration

  • Complete program reports, logs of activities, and statistical recording as required in a timely, accurate, and organized manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality and keep accurate statistical records.
  • Maintain accurate records of client information in Link2Feed and on The Salvation Army's computer system while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Perform general office duties such as answers telephone, direct enquiries, and answer inquiries; greet visitors and direct them to the appropriate person(s); file documents electronically or manually.
  • Work within established Salvation Army policies, procedures, and budget.

Health and Safety

  • Monitor safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards, and prepare, submit, and act on incident reports; provide calming intervention as required ensuring the safety of everyone.
  • Ensure that the Community & Family Services and Food Bank area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Seek out continual education in food safety and health standards, including maintaining Safe Food Handling Certification
  • Responsible to report any serious health and safety infractions or problems in accordance with policies to the Ministry Unit Leader.
  • Responsible to report any safety hazards, maintenance problems, equipment, or supply needs to the Ministry Unit Leader.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a regular full-time position based on 25 hours per week.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required, some weekend and evening work may be required.
  • The performance of the job requires the ability to lift/move 30 lbs., reach, bend, twist, and stoop frequently, work in a standing or sitting position for long periods, un-packing delivery vehicles, and computer keyboarding.
  • Occasional travel (10%) is associated with this position, will be required to use a program vehicle at times.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a Community College Diploma, Social Services Worker, or equivalent.
  • Current, valid First Aid & CPR and Safe Food Handling Certifications or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, own vehicle, and insurance, provide an original copy of current driver's abstract for review and verification that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including, experience in a variety of social service programs, with some supervisory experience and experience communicating orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse culture, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Proficient in working in a computerized environment; must demonstrate strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Sensitivity, awareness, and understanding of client's needs, problems, interests, skills, deficiencies, and idiosyncrasies.
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity, good judgment and ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.

  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background check search.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
