About the Role:

Reporting to the District Manager - Ontario Buildings, the Operations Manager - Buildings serves as a senior company representative with the responsibility of leading large, multi-discipline teams from bidding/proposals through construction and project closeout. The Operations Manager is responsible for a portfolio of projects where market-specific experience and expertise is an asset. Essential functions will include leadership, business development and client relationship management, project planning and start-up, project financials, project preconstruction, project execution and closeout, HSEQ, team building and mentorship, and a relentless focus on exceeding customer expectations.

This position has strong potential for growth within a growing business unit in one of Canada's leading General Contractors. The Operations Manager will be someone who wants to build more than just construction projects and under a strong mentorship of our current District Leader the Operations Manager will assist in building the team, the client base, and the business unit as a whole.

As an Operations Manager at Graham you will:

  • Manage a portfolio of ICI construction projects across Ontario
  • Engage Preconstruction in preparing, revising, and monitoring costs involved in developing project budgets
  • Oversee the estimating process for projects while mitigating risks/Oversee the subcontracting process, which includes facilitating initial scope review meetings, finalizing agreed processes, developing subcontract scopes of work, managing subcontract distribution and final execution process
  • Ensure that project schedules, milestone dates, and closeout checklists are prepared and maintained during project lifecycle
  • Establish relationships with suppliers and other key project personnel to ensure needed materials, supplies, tools, equipment, and personnel are provided where necessary, while directing and approving project resources as required
  • Reallocate resources accordingly to best accommodate various project needs at a given time
  • Communicate the performance standards/metrics teams will be measured against
  • Assist project managers with subcontractor disputes
  • Oversee the review of contract documents with project teams to ensure terms are clear on deliverables to ensure project work can be completed on time and within budget
  • Develop regular status reports for company executives and project steering committees
  • Oversee project forecasts and prepare variance reports / notes
  • Develop and recommend short-term operating budgets and assist the District Manager with long-term planning where required
  • Understand the requirements of owner's contracts including bonds, fees, notifications, schedules, reporting and costs
  • Oversee and understand commitments being made to clients, and Graham's associated risks while establishing and maintaining relationships with public and private sector clients, construction joint-venture partners, financing partners, key specialist subcontractors, as well as other stakeholders such as design teams and suppliers
  • Ability to negotiate in tough situations while winning concessions without damaging relationships
  • Actively participate in industry, client, and community relations to enhance and promote Graham
  • Proactively and aggressively seek new business opportunities
  • Responsibility for building and developing project teams and providing career guidance and mentorship to professionals working under you
  • Strong understanding of contracts in a variety of contact models

Qualifications/experience:

  • Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business or a related field
  • 15+ years of experience in a management role with responsiblity of managing a porfolio of construction projects
  • Experience pursuing and delivering complex ICI projects incl. Hospitals, Distribution Centres, Long-Term Care, Commercial and Institutional Facilities, etc.
  • A professional engineering or Gold Seal designation is preferred
  • Strong presentation skills and verbal / written communication skills
  • Commitment to drive quality and safety and an ability to evaluate project-related processes and make necessary changes to meet and exceed internal and external customer expectations
  • Understanding of scheduling and project management software
  • Ability to lead and analyze estimates and provide constructability input into tenders and proposals
  • Will have an entrepreneaurial mindset and enjoys chasing work, building business and developing teams in a busy construction sector
