JOB SUMMARY

The Field Operator is responsible for performing planned ground level switching and responds to, assesses, and takes appropriate action during electrical emergency situations as directed by System Office. The Field Operator is required to operate Hydro Ottawa's high and low voltage distribution system including the isolation and restoration of overhead lines, underground cables, customer-owned high voltage vaults, substation breakers, buses, and transformers and performs station inspections, customer premise investigations and capital asset inspections and testing.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities of the job include but are not restricted to the following:

  • Perform planned switching as directed by Hydro Ottawa's controlling authority on Hydro Ottawa's distribution system

  • Perform troubleshooting and emergency switching as directed by Hydro Ottawa's controlling authority to locate faulted equipment and restore.

  • Immediately identify all hazards and take appropriate action within area of expertise ensuring ongoing communication with Hydro Ottawa's controlling authority.

  • Follow all applicable Hydro Ottawa policies, procedures, guidelines and work instructions.

  • Perform planned customer shutdowns according to established procedures and Utility Protection Code.

  • Respond to customer premises to investigate electrical problems such as part out, all out, loose connections, blown fuses, etc., and complete appropriate documentation to ensure proper follow-up and/or conclusions.

  • Respond to SCADA monitored and customer premises alarms on Hydro Ottawa plant such as vault high temperature alarm, sub-station security or fire alarms, etc. to assess the cause of the alarm, take any required corrective action within area of expertise and ensure ongoing communications with Hydro Ottawa's controlling authority.

  • Perform routine inspections of Hydro Ottawa plant as required.

  • Install and remove residential single-phase meters as requested.

  • Respond to Fire, Police and Emergency Services requests involving Hydro Ottawa plant and report findings to System Office.

  • Provide support and assistance to System Office and other work groups as required in planned and emergency situations.

  • Prepare and check Work Protection Code documents and tags.

  • Communicate and work with other Hydro Ottawa work groups, outside agencies, contractors, customers, and inspectors on status or configuration of the electrical system as required.

  • Train and update trades staff on field operations responsibilities and functions as required.

  • Continually update and be familiar with new or changed Hydro Ottawa plant.

  • Participate in regular scheduled System Office training.

  • Perform all other duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Electrical/Electronics Technician or Technologist, or ability to obtain OACETT certification, or completion of a College Diploma in a technical discipline.

  • Minimum of 5 years electrical utility operations field experience may substitute for educational requirements

  • Experience in reading geographic maps and schematic drawings

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • English essential, both oral and written

  • Bilingual (English/French) considered an asset

  • Valid driver's license - Class G

  • Government of Canada security clearance

Selected candidates will require an above average score on a standardized mechanical, mathematical and reading comprehension assessment as an element of the selection process.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are governed by the collective agreement between Hydro Ottawa Limited and IBEW Local 636.
