Your Contribution

We are currently seeking a Laboratory Supervisor in our Thunder Bay, ON office.

  • Supervising a team of technicians in daily field and laboratory operations to provide geotechnical services;
  • Overseeing and conducting laboratory tests including but not limited to compressive strength testing of concrete, soil and aggregate gradation (sieve and hydrometer), plasticity tests (Atterberg limits), soil density testing (Proctor), direct shear test, consolidation test, rock & asphalt, and calibrating lab and field equipment in accordance with CCIL;
  • Monitoring others and also conducting field testing to ensure appropriate protocol is adhered to in execution of compaction testing using a nuclear moisture density gauge and field concrete testing to CCIL standards and CNSC requirements;
  • Maintaining open lines of communication in the facilitation of information exchange between external
  • Clients, Laboratory Supervisor and Field and Lab Technicians/Technologists;
  • Assisting with scheduling work, monitoring utilization and time sheets for direct reports to meet prescribed turnaround times;
  • Assisting with maintenance of budget and financial records including; invoices, accounts payable and
  • receivable for laboratory and field services;
  • Ensuing maintenance of accurate sample logs for concrete cylinders, aggregate and soil samples in accordance with CCIL;
  • Routinely inspecting area to ensure maintenance of equipment and work area to ensure safe conditions at all times;
  • Recording test data, preparing factual reports, summaries, data sheets or graphs for interpretation of results;
  • Overseeing work quality of field and laboratory technicians including data verification and work process
  • audits;
  • Assisting with maintenance of data base of records containing calibration certificates, registration certificates, equipment manuals and applicable standards in accordance with CCIL;
  • Participating in laboratory correlation and accreditation assessment programs (eg. CCIL);
  • Training field and laboratory technologists and technicians;
  • Making recommendations to control or eliminate unsafe conditions in the workplace;
  • Travelling out of town to perform field work as required; and
  • Assist in business development and preparation of materials testing quotations.

Your Profile

  • Completion of provincially recognized 3 year Technician or Technologist program required;
  • Possession of CET license or eligibility to obtain required;
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in laboratory and field testing required;
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in laboratory supervision required;
  • Valid driver’s license required;
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain Security Clearance required;
  • Possession of valid CCIL/CSA Certifications required;
  • Thorough understanding of ASTM, CCIL, MTO, AASHTO, CNSC and other specifications and requirements related to soil, aggregate, concrete, and rock testing; and
  • Understanding of civil engineering, construction and Health and Safety policies and regulations.
  • Strong organization and planning skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
  • Strong technical writing skills, ability to present information concisely and clearly;
  • Proficient with use of Microsoft Office;
  • Ability to understand and focus on new ideas and concepts to coherently communicate in writing;
  • Strong listening and interpretation skills, ability to retain salient points and synthesize information on complex issues;
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Ability to establish work priorities and deadlines;
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently problem-solve and tackle new assignments;
  • Able to handle multi-tasking and maintain focus in a busy work place;
  • Able to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure;
  • Physically fit and able to conduct field and laboratory testing independently; and
  • Knowledge, ability and attitude to comply with all required Health and Safety policies and regulations.
