KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To replace a permanent employee on a casual basis performing general supervision and care of a classroom, safety, and well-being of the children
  • Interact with the children to provide support and care
  • Recognize and respond to the needs of each child by using developmentally appropriate teaching and child behaviour management techniques
  • Assist in the planning, preparing, and implementing stimulating, age appropriate activities that encourage children's creativity and learning, and promote each child's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development
  • Role models appropriate behaviours and attitudes, supporting the mission of The Childcare Centre
  • May assist in orientating new children and families; provides on-going feedback on child's development and behaviour
  • May be required to safely escort children to and from school and on trips or walks outside the Centre.
  • Participate in special events put on by the Childcare Centre
  • Assist with effective risk management; monitor food safety, medication storage/disbursement, allergies, and facility cleanliness/maintenance; provide emergency first aid and complete and file incident reports as required
  • Ensure that all information about children, families, staff, visitors, and volunteers are strictly confidential; and that activity records and statistics are stored in a secure location
  • Establish and maintain regular communication with parents
  • Must know and implement: Centre routines and practices; CCEYA regulations; the Health Department guidelines
  • Attend and participate actively in all Program/Centre, staff, parental or other meetings as required

Perform other duties as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a casual relief position with no guaranteed hours. Flexibility in scheduling is required.

This position is called in to replace vacation and sick day off employee. Called in shifts can range from 3 to 8.5 hours (which includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break if shift is over 5 hours)

Normal location of work is: 3199 Lauzon Road, Windsor, ON N8T 2Z7

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed High School, plus specialized courses up to six (6) months
  • Early Childhood Education Diploma, registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario preferred
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience, including working with children in a childcare or school environment
  • Working knowledge of the CCEYA

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and adaptability. Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment
  • Effective organizational and time management skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills. Self-motivation and discipline
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
