About the role

The Opportunity

Company, Department: Emera Inc, Corporate Safety Location: Halifax, NS Closing Date: July 13, 2026 The Emera Safety team has a principal accountability to act as the Company’s authority on matters of safety policy, governance, planning and due diligence. The team supports Emera in its vision to achieve World Class Safety where no one gets hurt in our business. Our role on safety involves ensuring that the company’s management system requirements are established, implemented, and maintained. Reporting to the Senior Safety Assurance Professional, this position will involve supporting the safety assurance function by actively monitoring the compliance of Emera’s safety management systems enterprise wide by taking a key role in safety assurance activities, guided by the company’s safety auditing and compliance program. As well, it will involve providing technical and policy assistance on various safety initiatives and plans and implement and track programs that support corporate governance for Emera and its affiliates.

Key elements of this role include:

Participate in and lead safety audits across Emera companies, including audit planning, information gathering and documentation review; conducting onsite audit activities such as interviews, site inspections, job observations, and record reviews; and preparing audit reports and managing corrective action plans through to completion. Evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls to mitigate safety risks and assess compliance with corporate and subsidiary safety policies & procedures, standards, programs as well as provincial, federal & state laws and applicable safety regulations. Providing recommendations and advice to senior management and assisting the team in preparing the Emera Executive and Board reports. Assisting with the maintenance and development of the Emera’s safety management systems to enhance safety performance, fulfill compliance obligations and complete safety objectives. This will involve leading various continual improvement initiatives; working with Emera affiliates on various aspects of safety management systems and safety performance; and assisting with the preparation of various company internal and external reports. Assess and determine how legislation and various legislative initiatives are evolving, develop related communications to internal stakeholders and provide advice on developing/improving programs to address identified gaps and opportunities. Support the implementation and operation of the Cority Safety and Environment Digital Platform.

These skills will make you successful:

To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below: Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering or Audit related discipline(s) or equivalent post secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety. Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in safety, compliance and/or auditing. Strong analytical, critical thinking and communication skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives. Capable of collaborating across various corporate teams, and geographic areas, to build and maintain strong working relationships. Electricity or Gas utility (or equivalent) operational experience is considered an asset. A strong understanding of safety practices, Safety Management Systems (ISO 45001) and auditing techniques (e.g., ISO 19011) is considered an asset. Other combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Regular travel to Emera locations will be a necessary part of the role, including the ability to travel to Emera’s subsidiaries located in Canada, the US and Caribbean.
