Wood is recruiting for an Instrumentation & Controls Engineer with experience also in Electrical design to join its Minerals and Metals business focusing on brownfield industrial projects. This opportunity is at our Trail, BC office.

The Role

Wood is currently seeking a highly motivated Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to join our Minerals & Metals team located at our Trail, BC office. The role will be responsible for the review and development of electrical, instrumentation and control designs required on detailed engineering projects. It also includes signing documents as a Professional Engineer, and ensuring the quality and efficiency of electrical designs and installations. The I&C Engineer will also lead small project teams to meet scope, budget, and schedule requirements.

Our Trail office currently numbers over 50 engineers, designers and support personnel. Trail, located in Southeastern British Columbia near the cities of Rossland, Nelson and Castlegar, is an affordable family-oriented community of approximately 10,000 people. The area offers excellent education and health care facilities, as well as access to world-class skiing at Red Mountain, hiking, boating, fishing, hunting, golf and all outdoor activities available in the Kootenays. The Wood Trail office is currently offering a hybrid working environment, with your work week split between attending the Wood Office and working from home. Typical responsibilities

  • Review and develop Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls (EIC) designs for the detailed engineering phases of the project.

  • Select appropriate components for control systems, communication systems and fire detection/alarm systems, and select appropriate cables and panels to complete designs.

  • Prepare instrument, valve and control system procurement packages, including the development and/or review of specifications, datasheets and calculations, work with vendors and review vendor documentation.

  • Review and/or develop deliverables that will include control system architecture and block diagrams, communication network drawings, PLC and DCS panel drawings, instrument loop diagrams, junction box wiring diagrams, fire alarm system risers and layouts, instrument indexes, I/O lists, and any others required to complete projects.

  • Select appropriate instruments and valves for process measurement and control.

  • Assist in the creation and update of piping and instrument diagrams and control narratives.

  • Review and/or develop electrical designs including but not limited to schematic and wiring diagrams, single line diagrams, cable tray, lighting, equipment layouts, heat tracing, electrical lists, power quality and protection studies, and calculations to support designs.

  • Obtain measurements and collect data at job sites as required.

  • Prepare equipment procurement packages, including the development and/or review of specifications and datasheets, evaluate technical bids, meet with vendors and review vendor documentation.

  • Assist in the preparation of construction contracts including development of EIC installation specifications and scope of work.

  • Participate in the development of scope, budgets, and schedules.

  • Coordinate the project’s EIC team by managing design work packages, deadlines and budget.

  • Provide regular reporting to management and client regarding the EIC team progress and performance with respect to scope, schedule and budget.

  • Ensure quality by monitoring that team’s deliverables meet client and company standards.

  • Work and communicate effectively within a team of I&C engineers and designers, as well as interface with other engineering disciplines, project management team, clients and vendors.

  • Check the design work of others and provide technical feedback.

  • Mentor junior staff.

Expected:

  • Electrical Engineering (BSc) degree with specializations or experience in instrumentation and controls
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the province of British Columbia or have the ability to transfer Canadian PEng from another province.
  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience, preferably in supporting consulting projects for mining, metallurgical or similar process industries.
  • Class 5 driver’s license
  • Willingness to travel to client sites
  • Knowledge and experience in construction
  • Knowledge of CSA and IEEE standards including the Canadian Electrical Code
  • Experience as a project discipline lead overseeing a team of technical professionals and managing scope, schedule, cost, quality, and design of electrical projects.
  • Effective communication, organization and time management skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced, high volume and deadline-driven environment. Must have the ability to balance the workload in order to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Everyday use of Navisworks, Microsoft Word and Excel. Team player, but also able to work independently and take responsibility.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity using power system software to perform calculations (e.g. ETAP).

  • Database experience (AVEVA Instrumentation and/or SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI))

  • Working knowledge of 2D and 3D software (AutoCAD, AVEVA E3D)
