Heavy Equipment Operator - Roads
Salary Range: $40,000.00 - $50,000.00 (dependent on experience)
JOB SUMMARY:
Sagamok Anishnawbek is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Roads Heavy Equipment Operator to support the maintenance, repair, and development of community roads and infrastructure.
The Roads Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of heavy and light equipment to ensure safe and accessible roadways throughout the community. The role supports road construction projects, snow removal operations, equipment maintenance, and general public works services while contributing to the overall quality and safety of community infrastructure.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively within the Planning and Infrastructure Unit (P&IU) and contribute to the organization’s commitment to quality management, continuous improvement, and service excellence for Sagamok members.
POSITION DUTIES:
General Responsibilities
- Participate in regular Planning & Infrastructure Unit team meetings, supervision sessions, and annual performance evaluations.
- Assist in the development of annual roads work plans and operational budgets.
- Prepare quarterly and annual activity and statistical reports.
- Recommend updates and improvements to roads policies and procedures.
- Participate in community development meetings, training sessions, and ISO quality management activities.
- Stay informed of industry trends, best practices, and operational improvements related to roads and infrastructure services.
Roads Maintenance & Operations
- Conduct daily inspections of roads and perform general maintenance and repairs including:
- Grading gravel roads
- Filling potholes
- Seal coating and crack sealing
- Shoulder rebuilding
- Debris and litter removal
- Perform snow plowing, sanding, and snow removal operations.
- Apply calcium chloride for road dust control as required.
- Maintain and repair culverts and drainage ditches.
- Cut weeds and brush along roads and road allowances.
- Repair and install road signs and streetlights as required.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Operate various heavy and light equipment including:
- Loader backhoe
- Grader
- Snowplow
- Steam Jenny
- Trucks and other road maintenance equipment
- Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
- Transport equipment, materials, and supplies to work sites safely and efficiently.
- Notify the Roads Manager of equipment concerns, supply shortages, or operational issues requiring attention.
Project Support & Collaboration
- Assist contractors with capital road projects including:
- Road alignment
- Guardrail installation
- Surface treatment projects
- Support other members of the Planning & Infrastructure Unit when required.
- Participate in educating community members on road safety and infrastructure-related issues.
- Participate in health and safety training including:
- WHMIS
- Confined Space
- CPR & First Aid
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle for on-the-job use.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License and DZ License
- Clear Criminal Record Check (CPIC) valid within six months
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends when required
- Sign and maintain an annual oath of confidentiality.
- Secure and maintain certification in Privacy and Confidentiality.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
- Incumbent is subject to six months’ probation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Heavy Equipment Operator Training Certificate
- Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 2–4 years of experience operating heavy equipment and performing road maintenance activities.
- Strong knowledge of road maintenance and construction practices.
- Ability to safely operate heavy and light equipment in varying weather and road conditions.
- Understanding of workplace health and safety requirements.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
