Purpose

The Estimator is responsible for developing accurate and competitive cost estimates for projects involving automation and instrumentation, control systems, digital toolset, across multiple industries, including Energy & Nuclear, Oil & Gas, mining, and other resource sectors. This role ensures that all estimates align with project scope, technical specifications, and commercial requirements while supporting strategic business objectives and operational priorities.

The Estimator will work closely with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to gather data, analyze costs, and prepare detailed proposals. Success in this role requires strong technical knowledge of automation and I&C systems, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to manage multiple estimates simultaneously. The Estimator will also contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, cost optimization strategies, and client satisfaction to support sustainable business growth.

Responsibilities

Prepare detailed cost estimates for automation and I&C projects, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs. Experience in producing class 1-5 estimates. (Conceptual through to control estimates). Review project specifications, drawings, and technical documents to ensure accurate scope interpretation. Provide estimating support to the engineering disciplines through the full project lifecycle. Collaborate with engineering and project teams to validate technical requirements and identify cost drivers. Develop and maintain estimating tools, databases, and historical cost records for accuracy and efficiency. Analyze vendor and subcontractor quotations for compliance and competitiveness. Identify risks and opportunities within estimates and communicate recommendations to project leadership. Support bid preparation and proposal development, ensuring alignment with commercial strategies. Participate in project reviews and provide input on cost control measures during execution. Support project controls and change management teams with MOC and quantity tracking. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the estimating function and PMO governance.

What You Will Bring

Technical and Industry Experience:

7–10 years of experience in estimating or cost engineering for automation and I&C projects in industrial settings. Strong understanding of automation systems, instrumentation, and control technologies. Proven ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and industry standards. Proficiency in Cleopatra Enterprise (cost estimating software) is required. Experience with estimating software and tools, as well as proficiency in MS Excel and other Microsoft applications. Familiarity with various commercial contracting models (Lump Sum, Fixed Price, Target Price, Reimbursable). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Ability to work autonomously and rely on own technical judgment rather than seeking frequent technical assistance. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver accurate estimates under tight deadlines. Experience in Energy & Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Chemicals, Renewables, and Mining is an asset. Willingness to travel occasionally as required for project meetings and site visits.

A degree in engineering, automation, instrumentation & control, or a related technical discipline.

Additional Information

For applicants based in the province of British Columbia, the salary range is CAD $117,014-$172,079
