Building Operator
About the role
Overview
Monitors, maintains, and controls building systems across City-owned facilities, including environmental, energy, and life safety systems. Ensures occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and infrastructure integrity through on-site and remote system management.
Responsibilities
Building Systems & Controls Operates and programs building automation systems for HVAC, lighting, and related systems. Schedules systems to meet occupancy and operational needs. Supports energy management practices and system optimization. Provides basic training and support to facility staff. Maintenance & Troubleshooting Coordinates preventative and corrective maintenance of building systems. Troubleshoots mechanical and automation system issues. Arranges vendor repairs and confirms quality of work. Maintains parts inventory for critical systems. Monitoring & Performance Monitors building systems daily through BAS and site inspections. Oversees HVAC water treatment and compliance requirements. Tracks and reviews energy and utility consumption. Maintains accurate maintenance and system records. Customer Service & Support Responds to occupant concerns related to comfort and safety. Provides technical guidance to staff and contractors. Other Duties Assists with budgeting for equipment replacement. Participates in committees and supports operational initiatives. Reports and addresses safety or facility concerns. Performs other duties as assigned. Education
Minimum 3-year diploma or degree in a related field (e.g., Energy Systems, Building or Environmental Engineering Technology).
Experience
Minimun 2 years of relevant building operations and maintenance experience.
Additional Requirements
Valid MTO “G” class driver’s licence in good standing.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge of building systems, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and automation systems. Experience with building automation software and system controls. Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications. Experience coordinating contractors and managing maintenance projects. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance systems. Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
