Learn more at shn.ca Job Description: The Manager, Energy Management & Sustainability provides strategic and technical leadership in advancing SHN’s energy efficiency, sustainability, and environmental performance objectives. Working closely with Facilities, Redevelopment, Finance, Clinical Leadership, and external partners, this role leads the development and execution of energy and sustainability strategies that reduce costs, minimize environmental impact, and ensure regulatory compliance. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Redevelopment & Chief Redevelopment Officer, the Manager has a deep understanding of building systems, energy performance, and sustainability frameworks, leveraging data and technical expertise to drive operational improvements and long-term transformation. This role acts as a key bridge between technical energy data and organizational stakeholders, translating insights into actionable strategies and fostering a culture of sustainability across the organization. Responsibilities: Energy Management & Technical Leadership Lead enterprise-wide energy management initiatives across all SHN sites, including audits, monitoring, and optimization of HVAC, lighting, and building automation systems Identify and implement energy conservation measures, including retrofits, equipment upgrades, and system optimization Oversee energy monitoring, tracking, and verification systems to evaluate performance and identify Ensure building systems are operating efficiently and in compliance with applicable codes and standards Provide subject matter expertise on energy systems, infrastructure planning, and capital projects Sustainability Strategy & Program Development Lead the development and implementation of SHN’s Corporate Energy Management and Sustainability Plan, including net-zero and carbon reduction strategies Establish and track key sustainability metrics, including energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and water usage Drive waste reduction initiatives (e.g., 3Rs programs) and environmental stewardship efforts across the organization Embed sustainability practices into operational workflows, procurement, and clinical environments Align organizational initiatives with ESG priorities and evolving regulatory requirements Strategic & Financial Management Develop business cases and financial models for energy and sustainability initiatives, including ROI analysis and lifecycle costing Prepare and manage budgets for sustainability and energy-related capital and operational projects Identify and secure funding opportunities, including grants, rebates, and incentive programs Establish KPIs and dashboards to monitor performance and inform decision-making Report regularly to senior leadership on energy performance, risks, and opportunities Stakeholder Engagement & Change Leadership Partner with internal stakeholders (clinical teams, facilities, procurement, finance) to integrate sustainability into daily operations Build and maintain relationships with external partners, including utilities, government agencies, and industry associations Lead internal engagement initiatives, education campaigns, and training programs to promote energy-conscious behaviours Translate technical energy data into accessible insights and communications for non-technical audiences Represent SHN in external sustainability forums and professional networks Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement Establish and maintain performance measurement frameworks for energy and sustainability initiatives Analyze and interpret data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities Lead continuous commissioning and optimization of building systems Monitor compliance with environmental regulations and standards Drive continuous improvement through innovation, benchmarking, and best practice adoption Requirements: Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Architecture, Facilities Management, or related field (required) Master’s degree (MBA or equivalent) (preferred) PMP or LEED Designation (required) Knowledge of CSA and LEED (require) Professional certification such as P.Eng., C.E.T., PMP, (required) Professional Membership with OAA (Ontario Association of Architects), PEO (Professional Engineers Ontario), or equivalent; Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society (CHES), International Facility Management Association (IFMA), Energy Management Association (EMA) (preferred) 7–10 years of progressive experience in energy management, sustainability, or facilities operations Experience in healthcare or large, complex facilities environments strongly preferred Deep technical expertise in building systems (HVAC, BAS, lighting, cogeneration, etc.) Strong analytical and data interpretation skills, including energy modeling and KPI tracking Experience with energy audits, carbon accounting, and sustainability reporting frameworks Financial acumen, including budgeting, capital planning, and business case development Knowledge of environmental regulations, codes, and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, CSA) Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence across all levels Demonstrated ability to lead change and foster a culture of sustainability Proficiency in data and reporting tools (e.g., Excel, BAS systems, dashboards) This opportunity is posted to support the recruitment of an existing vacant position.
