As a Meter Service Technician, you will install, maintain, repair, and replace residential, commercial and industrial water meters and related radio electronic devices, ensuring compliance with the American Water Work Association (AWWA) standards and municipal bylaws. You will also perform field investigations into abnormal consumption, leaks, and meter irregularities, and educate customers. Primary duties include:
- Install, program, repair, and replace water meters, using plumbing and electrical trade skills, diagnostic software.
- Document and keep records on all meter activities (installation, removals, tests, replacements, repairs) using MMS, Sharepoint, Livelink software systems with mobile and laptop devices.
- Conduct technical field investigations into abnormal consumption, leaks, and frozen or tampered meters; address billing discrepancies.
- Provide technical communication and education to homeowners, contractors, and building operators on meter requirements, bylaw compliance, water conservation and safe valve operation.
Qualifications
- A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g., GED or CAEC [Canadian Adult Education Certificate]) and at least 10 months of related experience.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
- Must be eligible to obtain Confined Space Entry certification.
- Experience in plumbing, working with residential and commercial water systems, and working with municipal infrastructure will be considered assets.
- The successful candidate will demonstrate strong customer service, conflict resolution, and problem solving skills, as well as sound judgment and a commitment to health and safety.
Working Conditions: This position includes work in confined spaces, exposure to high pressure water systems, daily interaction with the public, and driving and working around active traffic zones/construction sites.
Pre-employment Requirements
- A security clearance will be conducted.
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
