The Climate and Environment department is responsible for executing YVR’s Environmental Sustainability Plan, including increasing waste diversion, reducing our carbon emissions, protecting the ecosystem on Sea Island and respecting archaeological and heritage sites. We also execute YVR’s Noise Management Plan, balancing the need for safe, convenient 24-hour travel with enjoyable urban living.

Position overview

We have an opportunity for a permanent, full-time Environmental Technician in the Environment Department. Reporting to the Manager, Climate and Environment the Environmental Technician will support the department by conducting field and office work related to environmental programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collect, analyze and report data through field studies.
  • Conducting environmental sampling programs including collection of surface water, groundwater and soil samples
  • Liaise with contractors and other departments at on-site project meetings and via other correspondence to advise of environmental concerns and provide advice on managing them.
  • Conduct environmental inspections at construction sites to ensure compliance with all environmental requirements.
  • Train others on various environmental sampling and data collection procedures.
  • Providing analytical and technical support on environmental projects including hazardous materials management, spill prevention and response; environmental protection; construction monitoring; sustainable design; noise management; air quality; energy conservation; waste reduction and recycling initiatives
  • Review Facility Permit (FAP) applications including engineering drawings for environmental concerns and draft conditional approvals.
  • Liaise with spill response contractors and other departments during spill events including reporting to external agencies (e.g. Transport Canada, Environment Canada) as required.

Key qualifications include:

  • Experience conducting environmental sampling for surface water, groundwater and soil in a variety of year-round conditions.
  • A diploma or degree in Environmental Studies or a related program; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Professional designation in an environmental or technical association will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials management and spill response.
  • Strong organizational and report writing skills.
  • Strong computer skills, especially databases, spreadsheets, and data management.
  • Class 5 Drivers Licence.

Although not required, French language skills are an asset as we are committed to providing bilingual services to our visitors and passengers.
