The Opportunity: The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting for an Industrial Mechanic – Treatment Plants to fill a permanent full-time position. As the Industrial Mechanic, working out of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, you will be responsible for the maintenance of the City’s Treatment Plants industrial machinery, mechanical equipment, and process equipment in compliance with applicable codes, policies, and regulations in an operating industrial facility. Key responsibility is for the continued safe, reliable, and accurate performance and operation of process equipment, mechanical, and structural assets to ensure compliance to policies and procedures including OH&S and the City’s Government of Alberta - Approval to Operate.
Top Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and Coordinate Mechanical Maintenance Activities - Organize and prioritize maintenance tasks, repairs, inspections, start-ups, shutdowns, and equipment modifications. Ensure work is completed efficiently while meeting operational, budget, and regulatory requirements.
- Inspect, Troubleshoot, and Repair Industrial Equipment - Diagnose equipment failures, investigate malfunctions, and perform repairs on industrial machinery and mechanical systems. Respond to both routine and emergency maintenance issues.
- Perform Preventive and Predictive Maintenance - Execute preventive maintenance programs, including replacing oils, seals, bearings, filters, belts, and other components. Conduct condition monitoring through oil analysis, vibration analysis, and equipment health assessments.
- Install, Commission, and Rebuild Mechanical Equipment - Install, align, test, adjust, and commission equipment such as pumps, gearboxes, motors, compressors, blowers, conveyors, valves, HVAC systems, and treatment process equipment. Rebuild and overhaul mechanical assets as required.
- Provide Technical Support and Expertise - Support project coordinators, engineers, contractors, suppliers, operators, and operations staff with equipment installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
- Maintain Asset Documentation and Maintenance Records - Ensure all maintenance activities are accurately documented in maintenance management systems and equipment logs. Review and update blueprints, schematics, technical documents, and asset records.
- Lead, Coach, and Mentor Staff - Provide technical training, mentoring, and guidance to junior staff. Support onboarding, knowledge transfer, and promote a respectful and inclusive workplace culture.
- Support Asset Management, Budgeting, and Procurement - Assist with preventive maintenance planning, budget development, equipment replacement recommendations, specification development, supplier evaluations, and procurement activities.
- Ensure Health, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance - Participate in safety programs, inspections, hazard assessments, incident reporting, emergency drills, and SOP/SWP development. Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements and City policies.
- Collaborate with Stakeholders and Drive Continuous Improvement - Work closely with operators, contractors, consultants, vendors, and internal departments. Recommend equipment improvements, support optimization projects, and contribute to operational efficiency and reliability initiatives.
As our preferred candidate, you will have:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Journeyperson Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Certification Fourth Class Power Engineering Certification will be considered an asset
- Having a dual ticket as a Machinist or Welder may be considered an asset
- Successfully pass all required safety courses and others to be defined by the province or by the City
- Class 5 driver’s license
- Minimum 5 years industrial maintenance experience as a Certified Journeyperson Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), in a Level III or IV treatment Plant or comparable industrial environment
- Ability to work unsupervised and co-operate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instructions, and to provide guidance and instructions to junior staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, property, and business owners/officers, and their representatives.
- Well-developed verbal, computer, and written communications skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- Strong computer aptitude including demonstrated proficiency with City based computer programs, databases, spreadsheets, and word-processing software.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to accurately work with a wide range of equipment.
- Understand and apply applicable industry best practices and The City’s Approval to Operate.
- Demonstrated safety skills in the use of specialized equipment including respirators and air quality monitors. Work may require use of harnesses and hoisting equipment.
- This position has a wide range of functional responsibilities and skill requirements, from operating pumps to dealing with dangerous chemicals, and is required to be proficient with a variety of tools and equipment.
Specific Demands of the Job
- This position is responsible for being aware of and complying with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures for day-to-day operations and to immediately report non-compliance situations.
- Ability to troubleshoot diverse problems and exercise critical thinking in the execution of their duties where precedent or policy do not always apply.
- This position may have a significant impact on public health and safety and the environment.
- Must be physically fit in order to climb, lift, bend and twist in awkward positions, and moderate physical exertion regularly in awkward positions.
- Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather and in conditions which may be noisy, dirty, wet, cold, hot, and disagreeable.
- Errors could significantly disrupt service levels and programs, requiring significant expenditures to correct, resulting in a loss of customer confidence, damage the public image of the City, and the environment.
- Hepatitis A and B inoculation is recommended prior to employment.
- This position requires working in a hazardous environment daily. Hazards are not limited to but include electrocution, drowning, handling of hazardous chemicals, working with rotating equipment, and in confined spaces. The use of SCBA or mask respirator is required when working in potentially deadly atmospheres.
Affiliation: Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 417 Status: Regular Full-time Remuneration: $46.43 to $48.88 per hour Hours of Work: 80 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday, some evening and weekend work may be required when needed. This position will be required for after-hours work for emergency repairs.
