Primary Duties
The Gas System Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient installation, repair and maintenance of the Kingston central gas distribution system. The gas system operator performs civil work for all other departments under the Utilities Kingston corporate infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install gas pipe for new and upgraded services and mains and maintain records of all completed work for mapping and regulatory compliance.
- Perform leak detection on all aspects of the distribution system.
- Inspect, repair and install or replace end of life or damaged service risers.
- Assist with the planning, excavation, installation and restoration of utility projects for electric, streetlight and water utilities.
- Tap and stop live gas mains for operational, emergency and capital projects.
- Promptly respond to natural gas emergencies and support activities of other utilities in emergency situations to minimize risk to public safety and the environment.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders to resolve emergency situations efficiently and safely.
- Ensure work is completed consistent with all standards, regulations and internal policies and procedures.
- Investigate incidents or customer complaints related to gas service and recommend appropriate actions to resolve issues.
- Collaborate with team members to coordinate work activities and ensure timely completion of tasks.
- Provide recommendations for improvements or changes to operational procedures to enhance efficiency and safety.
- Comply with all health and safety requirements, maintain a safe work environment, report hazards and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.
- To meet regulatory compliance, the gas system operator must pass a yearly competency assessment, by a TSSA a credit 3rd party organization.
Education, Certification and Other Qualifications Required
- Advanced communication skills
- Advanced knowledge of CSA B149:20
- Intermediate knowledge of CSA Z662:23
- Intermediate knowledge of Book-7 Traffic Control Guidelines
- Intermediate knowledge of trenching safety
- Intermediate knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements
- Basic proficiency with MS 365 and Arc GIS
- Must obtain GPI,0-8 Ton crane operator license, Back hoe certification, forklift certification.
Special Working Conditions/Conditions of Employment
- G2 Gas Technician Certification or 3 years’ experience in underground construction and maintenance
- Class ARZ drivers’ licence
- A Criminal Record Check, to the satisfaction of Utilities Kingston, will be required at the successful candidate’s expense
