Role Title: Supervisor, Microbiology
Status: Full Time
Location: Onsite
Role Purpose
This role is primarily responsible for overseeing microbiology-related activities within the company’s quality program. The position ensures effective microbial testing of raw materials, bulk, and finished products, and promotes microbiological awareness across the organization by supporting GMP compliance throughout the facility.
Key Accountabilities
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage microbiology laboratory operations to ensure compliance with Containment Level II standards, GMP, company policies, and customer requirements.
- Oversee microbial testing of raw materials, bulk, finished products, and purified water in accordance with established methods, ensuring proper documentation control.
- Lead the environmental monitoring program (plant and microbiology lab), as well as sanitation and hygiene programs across the facility.
- Investigate Out-of-Specification (OOS) and Out-of-Trend (OOT) results, initiate CAPAs, and ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
- Prepare and approve quality incident reports, planned deviations, and change controls in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Maintain laboratory inventory and oversee equipment maintenance and calibration programs.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and optimize laboratory processes.
- Recruit, train, and develop laboratory staff; provide ongoing feedback and conduct annual performance reviews.
- Train and qualify microbiologists and technicians on test methods and procedures.
- Support GMP compliance activities, including SOP/WI development, cleaning and sanitization validation (C&S), and internal audits.
- Participate in audits and inspections (internal and external), including hosting microbiology-related audits and coordinating follow-up actions.
- Promote microbiology and GMP awareness programs across the organization.
- Write, review, and approve SOPs and other microbiology-related documentation; ensure proper record retention.
- Validate and verify microbial testing methods in accordance with ISO/USP standards for cosmetics and OTC products.
- Liaise with client microbiologists regarding requirements, issues, and follow-ups.
- Initiate and approve purchasing requests (PREs) for microbiology laboratory needs.
- Review and release microbial test results and related documentation.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Perform microbial testing as needed in exceptional situations.
- Carry out additional tasks as assigned by the Quality Control Manager.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Conduct risk assessments for new formulations, microbiological processes, and new equipment in GMP areas.
- Assist in cleaning and sanitization validation studies for major equipment.
- Support QC activities as required.
- Contribute to ensuring overall plant compliance with GMP requirements.
Skills, Experience, and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
- Hands-on experience in microbiology within QC/QA environments.
- Training in GMP, WHMIS, and relevant regulatory standards.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and time management skills.
- Self-motivated with a proactive and continuous improvement mindset.
Total Rewards
The expected base salary range for this role is $75,000 to $85,000.
In addition to base compensation Cosmetica offers a competitive total rewards package which may include bonus eligibility, equity, benefits, retirement plans, paid time away from work, etc.
Final compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, skills, market conditions, and internal equity.
