Reporting to the Leader, Track and Way, you will be responsible for a wide range of duties included in day-to-day operations of maintaining Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Right of Way (ROW) infrastructure. You will ensure resource availability and allocation, with an emphasis on safety and maximizing productivity. You will oversee the quality of the track system to ensure safe and reliable track infrastructure for train service. Primary duties include:
- Oversee and ensure that required inspections, maintenance and repairs of the Track and ROW infrastructure are carried out effectively following Calgary Transit and industry standards for safe, reliable and continuous LRT operations.
- Train, evaluate and supervise employees with respect to all work procedures, equipment operations, ROW operating procedures, and standard practises.
- Complete the recruitment process and evaluate/review probationary employee performance and approve for permanency, extension, or termination. Monitor and administer attendance management for direct reports.
- Manage work assignments and complete administrative duties relating to unionized employees.
- Interpret ATU Collective Agreement to appropriately manage staff and conduct investigations relating to complaints and represent management at grievance hearings.
- Implement health and safety initiatives and programs, support incident investigations, develop a course of action and initiate safety improvements.
- Lead safety meetings for employees and address health and safety concerns.
- Ensure that workplace investigations, safe work procedures and field level hazard assessments are being performed to help mitigate/avoid incidents.
- Coordinate with Track and Way employees and external contractors to ensure repairs and maintenance are completed in a timely manner and performed according to standards.
- Supervise implementation of track lifecycle replacement or maintenance projects ensuring that resources are available and utilized efficiently, work is carried out safely and in accordance with approved design and specifications.
- Provide recommendations on repairs, procurement or replacement of equipment, vehicle fleet and tools.
- Ensure that the shop and yards are kept clean, and that tools and materials are accounted for and maintained.
- Respond to emergency calls and implement a response to the situation.
Qualifications
- A completed High School diploma or equivalency (For example: GED) is required.
- At least 10 years of experience in a similar track maintenance and construction working environment.
- Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
- Knowledge of track maintenance principles, methods and practises related to track system construction and maintenance ensuring adherence to policies and standards as well as regulatory requirements.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- A diploma or degree in Transportation, Civil or Railroad Engineering would be an asset.
- Previous Calgary Transit Track & Way experience would be an asset.
- Experience leading and supervising in a similar track maintenance, construction and operational environment would be an asset.
Working Conditions: The majority of work is outside on the LRT right-of-way during revenue service in all type of weather conditions, generally on a fixed shift that is subject to call-out at irregular hours. You will be required to work occasional overtime on the weekend during implementation of lifecycle replacement projects.

- Days of work: This position works night shifts, 4 days per week. Sunday - Thursday, 22:00 - 08:00.
