Information about the role:
Emeritus is seeking an Industry Expert Speaker in Robotics Essentials: Design and Building Robotic Systems for MIT xPRO. The Industry Expert Speaker should function as a subject matter expert (SME), and a learning support partner capable of helping learners apply complex concepts in practice, through the 10-week online program. The Industry Expert Speaker will be working closely with the Emeritus Instructional Team and MIT xPRO faculty. Candidates must have industry experience and demonstrated knowledge of the course subject area; They will guide learners through complex topics, requiring significantly more than general familiarity with robotics systems. The Guest Speaker should have hands-on experience building or designing robotics systems and enough practical depth to support live webinars, troubleshoot learner challenges, and be a guide throughout the program. This is a great role for someone who wants work flexibility and the chance to diversify their resume with consultancy and teaching experience. This is an independent contractor position in a remote setting.
Key Responsibilities of the Industry Expert Speaker include but are not limited to:
Facilitate sessions and moderate required discussion boards. Support learners in synthesizing live session content delivered by the faculty (e.g., robotics frameworks) Assist with capstone assignment challenges.
Qualifications for the role:
10+ years of extensive work experience in the robotics field. A bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields: Robotics engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering or any related field. A master’s degree is preferred for advanced research, AI or autonomous systems. Proven experience leading robotics projects. Experience designing, building, testing and troubleshooting robotic systems. Ability to read and create mechanical drawings, CAD models. Hands-on experience with robotics fundamentals: kinematics and dynamics, motion planning, robot control systems, sensors and embedded systems. Experience with programming using python, MATLAB/SIMULINK. ROS/ROS2 Experience implementing or testing AI-powered applications, computer vision, autonomous navigation and plan path algorithms. Familiarity with hardware systems and prototyping. Experience supporting technical learners in applied or project-based environments. Experience supporting executive or mid-career professionals in continuing education is highly preferred. Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills with an ability to listen effectively, respond appropriately, and maintain a mutual comfort level while working with a diverse population. Ability to translate technical content into actionable insights. Empathetic and learner-centered approach. Comfortable in an online environment, navigating LMS platforms (Canvas), Zoom, Slack, or similar environments. Strong organizational and time-management skills to manage weekly cycles of engagement and support.
Program Description and Context: The convergence of the cloud, Internet of Things, rapid prototyping and other technologies, and the need for operational efficiencies driven by global competition have ushered in a new era: the age of robotics. The traditional place for robots, the factory floor, is seeing record numbers — 2.7 million robots worldwide, according to the International Federation of Robots. Further, the meteoric growth in artificial intelligence and the rise of human—robot interactions has increased the demand for professionals who can harness the massive power of automation. MIT xPRO's Robotics Essentials program offers an immersive curriculum where participants can strengthen their understanding of real-world robotic systems, human-robot interactions, and the very real challenges of implementing robotic systems in society. By the end of this program, participants will have exposure to a wide range of robotic controls and systems, a framework for understanding full stack robotics, and a deeper appreciation of opportunities for using robotics and automated technologies. Duration: 10 weeks (estimated learner commitment: 4–5 hours/week). Structure: Blend of asynchronous Canvas activities and live Zoom sessions. Target Audience: Mid- to senior-level professionals and technical leaders seeking to integrate the use of robotics in their workplace.
