Salary: $43,004 - $64,506

Job Type: Full-Time (Permanent)

Location: Water Division - St. Louis, MO
Incumbents in this position maintain and repair Water Division production and distribution systems, equipment and grounds for the purposes of maintaining the City’s water distribution system. Duties include: cutting, caulking and replacing pipes; excavating; operating pumps, trucks, tractors, and mowers; pavement breaking; pouring concrete; replacing asphalt and cleaning water settling basins.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
Installs stop planks on basins to detour flows and seals leakage. Cleans water treatment basins, tunnels, and conditioners. Operates various valves and sewer gates for flood protection, shut off water mains, basin cleaning and draining. Provides plant visitor check-in at front gate (Howard Bend Plant). Filter renovations: jackhammer out filter rock, vacuum out debris, and replace with new filter rock. Concrete renovations; break out, clean out and prep site, and help place new concrete. Asphalt repairs; general repairs to roads and replacement due to construction. Install and repair water mains. Hand dig trenches for various water, chemical, electrical, storm and sewer lines in and around various obstacles and utility crossings. Backfill, tamp, and level various construction areas prior to seeding and strawing. Help erect, repair, and maintain chain link fencing and barriers around plant perimeter and reservoirs, Clean out various sewers, manholes, and street drains along plant grounds. Operate motor vehicles including forklift, pickup, and dump trucks. Operates grounds maintenance equipment and tractors. Performs custodial maintenance in service building and garage areas. Operates small power tools such as jackhammer, chipping hammer, tamper, water pump, air compressor, toxic gas monitor, generators, etc. Installs platforms, railing, grating and ladders on and around basins. Makes work sites safe by installing barricades, warning tape, or cones. Pick up parts, supplies, and materials for continuous operation of plant functions. Mix concrete for repairs and for use in fabricated lids, curbs, and pipe supports. Acts as lead person when assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan. Human Interaction: Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others. Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as hand and power tools, threading/tapping equipment, wrenches, forklift, jack hammer, loader, backhoe and trucks and/or related materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as safety regulations, work orders, maps, blueprints and general operating manuals. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentage and decimals. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Other Requirements
Positions require shift, weekend and holiday assignments, mandatory overtime and 24-hour emergency call. Shift differential of 1% is paid for evening, night and weekend shifts.
Qualifications
Two years of experience in construction. Qualifying experience must indicate skill and experience in the use of tools and equipment such as basic hand tools, engine driven pumps, power saws, jack hammers, air compressors and related construction equipment. OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver’s license will be considered for this position.
Preferences: Experience in water or sewer line construction; CDL licensure is preferred.

City Residence Preference Points
City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
