Reporting to the Supervisor, Infrastructure Delivery, or designate, the Construction Inspector ensures that all work related to Capital and Subdivision Development works is performed in compliance with approved plans and relevant specifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed inspection of all phases of construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, standards, and regulations
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation throughout all stages of construction, including daily job diaries, field notes, site photos, progress reports, and final measurement records to support contract payments, project close-out, and as-constructed submissions
  • Coordinate and liaise effectively with internal departments, external agencies (e.g. Region of Durham, utilities), consultants, developers, contractors, and residents to support project delivery and minimize disruptions.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues, site conflicts, and public complaints related to construction activities
  • Provide technical input and advice on construction-related matters, including constructability reviews, drawing modifications, and accurate quantity measurements to support progress billing and quality assurance
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Completion of a three (3) year Civil Engineering Technology diploma, a junior level candidate will have a minimum of one (1) year of experience, an intermediate candidate will possess a minimum of three (3) years, and a senior candidate will possess a minimum of four (4) years relevant construction experience, or have an equivalent combination of education and relevant construction experience
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation is an asset and preferred for the senior level candidate
  • Thorough working knowledge of engineering principles, standards and best practices, materials and methods of construction
  • Detailed knowledge of construction specifications and contract documents and the ability to interpret technical drawings
  • Established skills and experience in Microsoft Office applications and related software
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively both orally and in writing with the general public, contractors, elected officials, other agencies, and staff
  • Good organizational, project management, and problem solving skills
  • Strong technical, mathematical and analytical skills with proven aptitude to work with figures
  • Able to climb and walk over rough ground and work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Possess and maintain an Ontario Driver's Licence, minimum Class "G", in good standing, and pass the Corporation's tests for motor vehicle operation
  • Ability to provide own transportation for travel between work locations as required

Please note that there are three (3) levels of the Construction Inspector position. The starting rate and salary grade will be commensurate with skills and experience of the successful candidate.

Salary Grade: Junior, Level 7: $37.95 - $42.15, Intermediate, Level 9: $42.05 - $46.72, Senior, Level 11: $44.45 - $52.26

As a condition of employment, the City of Oshawa will require successful candidates to undergo a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters check and an employment medical.
