SUMMARY OF THE POSITION As a key member of the Research & Development team, the R&D Engineer will oversee and conduct cutting-edge research to support the strategic growth of the company by bringing life to new technology. The successful candidate will participate in active research and product development with a focus on solid waste handling and processing; anaerobic digestion; wastewater treatment, nutrient recovery, and renewable power generation. The role will initially support maternity leave coverage within the R&D group, with primary involvement in laboratory bench-scale research activities before transitioning into a broader R&D engineering role.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Reporting to the Lead R&D Engineer, responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Manage all laboratory-based activities, including analysis, testing, data collection, reporting, and procurement of laboratory materials and reagents. Develop, manage, and execute research and development programs. Review operational and experimental data to identify trends, diagnose process issues, and support technology development. Develop mass and energy balance models and process simulations for anaerobic digestion, wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and solid waste processing systems. Participate in the development of new technologies from concept through pilot testing, detailed engineering, commissioning, and commercialization. Prepare engineering deliverables, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), equipment specifications, bills of materials, technical reports, and related documentation. Support technology commercialization activities, including economic evaluations, market assessments, vendor coordination, and preparation of operation and maintenance documentation. Travel to operating facilities to support commissioning, troubleshooting, optimization, and performance evaluations. Work collaboratively with equipment vendors, consultants, and internal engineering teams to successfully deliver technology development projects. Other projects and tasks as assigned by the discretion of Anaergia. WHAT YOU BRING Education and/or Experience University degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering, or equivalent degree/experience. 0-3 years experience with biogas, renewable natural gas (RNG), wastewater, anaerobic digestion, and/or organic waste processing. 1-3 years of experience in a laboratory setting conducting laboratory analysis Technical and Personal Skills Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings, including PFDs & P&IDs, mechanical arrangement drawings and plot plans, controls schematics, electrical single line diagrams, and electrical schematics. Results-oriented; demonstrated success in overcoming obstacles, maintaining timelines, and budgets. Accomplished communicator. Self-starter; able to seize opportunities and move projects forward with minimal direction. Team player with proven ability to drive research programs to conclusion without sacrificing analytical results. Able to work in a fast-paced, growth-oriented organization. Effective problem-solving skills. Strong analytical, technical writing, and problem-solving skills. Additional Requirements Must be legally authorized to work in Canada with the ability and willingness to occasionally travel to the United States or other countries Valid driver’s license and ability to drive to operating facilities in Ontario. Registered professional engineering designation or the ability to achieve the designation in Ontario.
