Position Overview
The Nisga’a School District is seeking a Technology Education Teacher (Woodwork, Metalwork, etc.) who will also serve as the Trades Coordinator. The role is carried out within inclusive, relationship‑centred learning environments and contributes to reconciliation through culturally responsive, hands‑on learning experiences that connect students to skills, pathways, and future opportunities.
Working collaboratively with school teams, community partners, and external agencies, the position focuses on delivering engaging trades programming, coordinating trades and dual credit opportunities, supporting Nisga’a Secondary students while they attend dual credit programming at post‑secondary institutions, and supporting student engagement and transitions. The role is anticipated to be structured as approximately 80% Technology Education teaching and 20% Trades Coordinator responsibilities, with final allocation determined based on school and district needs. This role requires regular travel between schools and community partner sites.
Key Responsibilities
• Plan and deliver engaging secondary instructional programs in woodwork, metalwork, and trades related electives
• Create safe, inclusive, and well managed shop and learning environments that promote hands on skill development
• Support students in developing practical skills, work habits, and pathways related to trades and career readiness
• Coordinate district wide trades programming, including alignment of courses, use of facilities, and shared resources
• Coordinate and organize dual credit programming for secondary students across the district
• Support students with applications, registration, and transition into dual credit trades programs
• Provide ongoing support and monitoring for students participating in dual credit programs
• Collaborate with post secondary institutions and trades training providers, including Coast Mountain College, to support student success and program alignment
• Collaborate with school teams to support student engagement, attendance, and successful transitions
• Build and maintain partnerships with external agencies, trades organizations, post secondary institutions, and community partners
• Support workplace safety practices, equipment maintenance, and compliance with relevant regulations
• Engage families and community members in supporting student learning and career pathways
• Participate in professional learning and collaborative practices to strengthen trades education across the district
Required Qualifications
• Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligibility)
• Legally permitted to work in Canada
• Journeyperson / Red Seal certification in a recognized trade related to woodwork, metalwork, or industrial arts
• Experience teaching or supervising students in trades, shop, or hands on learning environments
• Knowledge of safe work practices, equipment use, and shop management
• Valid BC Driver’s Licence and ability to travel between schools and partner sites within the district
Preferred Attributes
• Completion of a Technology Teacher Education Diploma (e.g., BCIT) or a comparable technology education teacher‑training program.
• Appreciation for the important role of language, culture, and community in Indigenous education
• Strong instructional and classroom management skills in practical, hands on learning settings
• Learner focused, inquiry based approach that motivates and challenges students
• Ability to build positive, respectful relationships with learners, families, colleagues, and community partners
• Experience supporting career exploration, trades pathways, or transitions to employment or post secondary training
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills
• Commitment to collaboration, teamwork, and professional learning
• Willingness to adapt programming to student needs within a culturally rich and community connected environment
Compensation & Incentives
